Hi everyone,
so far, I've been to STR and FRA a couple of times already, and I know the spotting locations at both airports fairly well. But now I wanted to get a "different perspective". Do any of you know good locations to spot at German airports? Your input is greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Sebastian

Sebastian,
Berlin-Tegel has some good spotting points, although I think they are only good in the morning till noon... TXL has a great observation deck...
Hamburg, is also very good, 3 (!!!) observation decks and some very good vantage spotting points around the airport. When you're in HAM you can also try to visit XFW for some nice shots...
Duesseldorf has also two excellent observation decks, light is good till noon.
Hope that helps...
Cheers from Hamburg

Are you talking about the observation deck at FRA? Because if you are, I'm pretty sure it will still be open in a couple of weeks. However once the construction starts for the A380 they will close the one at Terminal 1 and reopen the one at Terminal 2.
There are two really good spots i know of. One is the right at the approach for rwy 25. However I don't think you will be able to reach it with public transportation. A friend of mine told me though that he used to walk there from the terminal. Supposedly it's a 15-20 minute walk. The other location is at rwy 18, where you can shoot the takeoffs from rwy 25 or the approaches for rwy 7. You will need a car, a bike or a cab ride there though unless you feel like walking. I would say that's about a 25 minute walk.
Cheers,
Sebastian

I am going to be in Germany in mid-July.
Does anybody have info or directions on some of the more provincial airports such as Friedrichshafen, Nuremburg, Dresden, & Leipzig?
How about Berlin Schoenfeld & Templehof too?
I have walked from the Terminal 1 to Runway 25 end at FRA and it takes more than 15-20 minutes. Try 30/40 minutes and I am kind of fit and walk typically faster than most.
Sorry if the 15-20 minutes weren't that adequate. But it was only second hand info for me too. So I guess half an hour or 40 minutes will do the job then. Did not want to be misleading here, thanks for the correction Carpethead.

Good news! Is this official already? The platform was closed after 9/11 & has never been reopened ever since.

You can reach the Rwy 25 spot with buses departing from the terminals. The bus stop is air base, from there it's a 5-minute walk.

That's a very optimistic estimate for the Rwy 18 platform. I've never tried walking there from terminal 1, but I reckon it takes about an hour.

Photography-wise Leipzig is one the worst airports you can get in Germany. Although the southern runway must be closed now for construction, traffic is still very slow on the northern runway. It's mainly charter & domestic flights. So you get small planes there, but you can't get close to them because the airport area is so vast. (The whole northern section was built at the end of the 1990s.) There is one obervation hill on the north side, which can only be reached by car or bike. They actually charge money to climb this hill—50¢ if I remember correctly. As a reward you can view the runway facing the sun almost all day.
Tempelhof is a fascinating airport located right in the heart of Berlin. It will definitely close in the near future. So get there while you can. There are small planes only (the largest is a 737), but you get closer to the action west & east of the airport. There are morning & evening rushes on weekdays but barely any traffic on the weekend.

If you want some infos about Dresden send me a email, I have a map with spotting locations. I think I'm the only local here on Anet.

My favorite spotting place in Germany is Dusseldorf (DUS-EDDL). There are two great observation decks, one on terminal B and the other at the railwaystation.
The sun is most of the time in the back.
