I've got a Canon MV700 that is pretty reasonable for a take along DV camera. Its low light performance isn't brilliant, but it's fine for recording the kids for posterity. It's not really suitable for taking freeze frame images because of the CCD resolution (440kpix), but if you just need video clips, go for it.

Something else to think about when deciding on what to buy is the power of the optical zoom. The standard is about 10x, but for aircraft (and wild life) up to 20x is very useful. You do need a steady hand at the upper end of the range. A relatively powerful optical zoom does not mean high cost, so it is worth checking the specs of models in your budget range. Hope you find something suitable.
