I had a pic make the front cover of the April issue of "Airline Pilot Careers" magazine. I am very proud of it, its really neat because what they did is cut out the actually aircraft from the original and put it with a different background.

This photo got into 'Flypast' magazine, onto the 2005 Vulcan calendar and if anyone is going to the Wellesbourne Wings & Wheels on Sunday 19th June you should see it on the publicity posters.

I would like to pretend that is was a technically and artistically carefully crafted photo but in reality my CF card had got jammed and I literally snapped this one in sheer abrupt panic!  blockhead

I've never had a pic published, but I do have a question I'd like to ask.

Do you send pics to the magazines, hoping they'll publish it or do they always come to you first? Or can it be a bit of both?

Kas

I got my first shot published in the May 2005 issue of Airline Business. I was quite thrilled to see a shot of mine and print and also to receive a nice check!  bigthumbsup  This shot was used in an article about the US Regional Airlines.

Some questions:
-How long did it take any one of you to get a shot published?
-Without mentioning exact dollar values, how much does one get per shot, on average?
-Where do these publications find your shots?

For one-time usage photos, I've made anywhere form $20 to $1,000 per photo.

For me, I think I got my first order only 3 months after getting my camera.

But that does not include the airline magazines. They usually don't pay that much, but the other publications I've done are much better in terms of compensation.

However, I still prefer being published where all my friends go and have more of an appreciation for the photo, whereas in business magazines, plane photos are just decor.

I took me about a year of uploading before a sale FINALLY went through, I've had other inquiries that have gone nowhere...waiting to hear back on one right now.  Smile

The only shot I have published, which you see above, got me 171USD...was converted from 90GBP.

All my contacts have been through this site.

A related question, how many percent of your commercial requests have actually lead to a sale?

For publishing requests, I'd say about 50%.

For other kinda of sales and usage, usually 80% I'd say.

- I got my first request about 4 months after I started to upload here.
- Talking about ( small ) magazine publications only, I'd say most times between $30 to $120. More if it's larger than half page usually.
- I got all requests via A.net.

Quoting Staffan (Reply 17):

If the person / company who sent the request does agree to pay for useage, I'd say 75-85%.
If they first want a photo for free and I quote them a certain amount I'd say not more than 20%.

cheers,
Florian

Airliners World was all set to purchase the below pic for a magazine they were producing on 747's. Then they asked if I had any other shots of Air Force One. I sent them some that I hadn't even submitted to a.net and they picked one.

that photo was for Boeing and it was the only shot taken by a non-boeing photographer, rest of the portrait photos in the book are by Roland Morgan and other aircraft shots are from The Boeing Company.

skywest used this for something, can't remember what it was.

http://www.airliners.net/open.file/445136/M/

got quite a few more, just can't be bothered sifting through all the photos.
