I just want to share with everyone whos looking into getting new glass for their camera body..ive noticed more and more posts about advice on the lenses and such.. i went out to the camera store to actually try out the 70-200 2.8 they didnt have the 100-400L in stock so ill be back..but it really helps and answers tons of your questions by physically trying it out..if you live close to a store i suggest going out and tryin out these lenses for yourselves...they were very nice and let me shoot around with it for a while. just a little heads up for future reference

No news....have always done it that way and will in the future, but this is good advice for newbies!!!

I don't rely on others, I have to try it out myself and then only then I know if the lens or camera body is the right one for me. My local pro shop has pretty much everything available.

p.s. did you try the 70-200 f2.8 L IS or w/o IS?

I tried out the 70-200 2.8 IS lense..verry verry fast AF of course...i took shots at full focal length and came out real clear..its just not enough focal length for me..im goin for the 100-400L IS glass.. its ONLY about 1600USD. haha

The 70-200f2.8 IS is one of the best lenses out there. Tack sharp at every focal length, but if you need more range then the 100-400 is probabaly the way to go.

Still, I prefer f2.8 glass over all the others....well there is one exception though.
The mother of all lenses.......600mm f4 L IS.

Btw you can pick it up ( EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS) at &H for under 1400 bucks these days. (rebate already included)

I been using the 70-200 f2.8 IS for a about a month now on a Canon 20D body and find the quality is excellent, and with the 1.6x magnification on the Canon sensor it gives 320mm focal length which meets most of my needs.

Although, I am thinking of getting a 1.4x converter just to give me that extra pull when needed.

Does anyone have any experience of this combination? Is there much loss of quality?

Regards
Tony

Tony,

with the 1.4 extender you should just do fine. Almost no visible loss of image quality. Check the forum at fredmiranda.com there are some threads about the 70-200 plus the 1.4

find a store that rents lenses, that way you can sample a ton of different stuff, some shots will let you apply the rental fee to the purchase.
