Hello guys.

I've searched for this topic but can't find anything on it.

I recently aquired a new computer with a 17" LCD flatscreen. Before , I've been using a CRT monitor for editing and I still do (Using a computer in my mothers office). What I'd like to know is between the LCD monitor and the CRT monitor , which provides a "truer" look to the image? It seems my LCD overexposes photos a bit but I think that can be configured.

Your thoughts?

Well, I have always thought CRTs are better. One reason is that the LCDs tend to change the image if you are not looking at it straight on. Also, they tend to make things sharper than they really are.

Hi SA006,

I posted a thread couples of days ago about my CRT monitor.

CRT monitor, at least the one I'm using, gives me kind of "soft" pictures, which makes me a little bit hard to find "jaggies."

Your monitor isn't even worth mentioning, it's quite an anomaly. I have had far better results working with a crappy emachines 17" CRT than most LCD's.

ALL monitors suck unless they are properly calibrated. I'm more worried about color and brightness instead of sharpness though.

Will the monitor calibration utility assist the LCD as well? I guess its one of those pointless arguments though. I'd like to know what most of the screeners use.

Lol same here, I am the same as your first quote but the second part of your sentence doesn't really apply to me lol Silly

I like the small screen because I don't have to get close to the monitor to see the photo up close because it fills the monitor.

As for colours and sharpness during photo editing, you won't get better than a LCD. Things that look a little too sharp on LCD look just about right on CRT.

Well thats what I think anyway. Since I't had my LCD, my acceptance ratio has gone up a little!! Wink

P.S.: From my experience TFT's overexpose and oversharpen images, but the ones I worked with were the cheapest available.

CRT will be cheaper by a fair bit nowadays.

LCD's are kinder on the eyes after long hours.

For a LCD thats around $450 - $550 (AUS), you'd be getting a pretty good one. And the lower the response time the better too.

Go with a flatscreen CRT.

One more thing:
I found LCD screens on certain laptops to soften some of the same images compared with my CRT.

Rumour has it... if you want THE screen for photo editing, Eizo ColorEdge CG220 is the one to get. It's a 22.2 inch LCD capable of showing the entire Adobe RGB color space. It comes with software and a hardware spectrophotometer for calibrating.

I have a brand new Apple Cinema Display (hardware calibrated) and at least for print the colours are much more accurate than on my old CRT. So it can't be that bad for photo editing either.

Four words: Make sure it is calibrated!! Just buying an average screen and using it out of the box is nonsense.

I use a Samsung SyncMaster 19'' flat screen CRT. Made a huge difference from my old cheap 17''.
