Another Bad Quality Help Post!

Hi Guys,

I've been reading the forums a lot, trying to get to the bottom of why my rejection rate is not getting any better, but I'm still perplexed!

This is the first time I'm asking for your help in the forum. I just had this one rejected today, and I would like to know how you would improve upon it:

Is it not bright enough? Is there too much glare on the fuselage? Or can I not see the forest for the trees! LOL

I would just like to know your thoughts on what I can do to improve my editing.

I'm not a great expert in the editing field but to my eyes the shot is generally soft, especially around the nose and under-belly. The belly also looks a bit grainy. Not sure if you tried to lighten this area but it somehow doesn't look quite right to me.

I tried looking at the levels in Photoshop and this suggests that overall the image is slightly too light (overexposed). I found I needed to pull the left hand (dark) slider in a bit to get to the edge of the spikes on the histogram.

I don't see a real problem with the fuselage highlight although it is perhaps a little distracting.

When I equalize the image I can also see a couple of what look like dust spots (although they are quite faint). There is a large one in the bottom left corner and another near the right wing tip. Might be worth checking the original image by equalizing it and see if you can spot them.

Perhaps some of the folks with more knowledge and experience in the editing field can give you more definitive advice.

Thanks so much for your help. I really needed to hear from someone other than my closest friends, who of course think every shot is perfect! I see what you mean about the fuselage underside...I did use the shadow/highlights function for that. Perhaps I was a bit too aggressive there. I'll have to play more with the histograms as well. That's something I really don't know how to do just yet. I know what they are and I know how to change them, I just don't know how to "read" them, really.

As far as the dust spots, I wouldn't be surprised! I always try to edit them out, but I may have missed some by not equalising it. I did just have my camera cleaned, so they shouldn't be too much of a problem anymore, at least for a while! ( I hope!)

I'll practice a bit more on my editing before uploading again. I have 160 shots in the base, but it's all been luck so far I guess!

Glad to help but like I say I'm no expert. Not sure if you have seen any of the work-flows produced by the guys that are editing specialists but there are a couple that I have found helpful.

You can link to one by Eric Daniel Smith from the Airliners.net Photo Upload Page (Look in near the middle of the page next to where it says New in yellow). I only have PS Elements 2 for editing and I find this work-flow a little bit complex for my level of ability.

The one I have found more helpful is from Jid Webb. It can be found at :

This one will certainly show you how to do the levels adjustment.

Totally agree, that is a fantastic workflow, it's very helpful, easy to understand, well written and it works wonders!

Thanks Guys! That Jid workflow is fantastic...can't wait to go home from work and give it a go. I tried some other workflows, but always ended up with something closer to this one. This seems like one I can work with. I also learned a couple of new things just reading through it quickly, I hope there's even more when I follow through with it later!
