Hi John,

I'm not the greatest on military serials (especially US) but as far as I can tell 60-3614 was a UH1B that belonged to the US ARMY. The aircraft looks to be in basic army colours but, confusingly, says Navy on the tail boom. If the serial number is genuine I wonder if the operator should be US Army but with a comment in the remarks about the "Navy" painted on the tail. Certainly the serial number is not a US Nave one as they use a different format to the Air Force and Army.

Not sure if this is much help.

All the best,

John

Hi John,

I was thinking on the same track, and its just had 'Navy' painted on to confuse Anetters..

Regards, John

As the helicopter is in a museum, I think I'd try Untitled instead of US-Navy and don't click the military box, click private instead.

I am extremely confident in USA - Navy and MILITARY. All research indicates it did not at the time of the photo (Nor did it ever, apparently) have a civil registration, so its identity is its military identity.

What we have here is an Army bird that was navalized. I am suspicious that what the screener was looking for was a naval format for the registration. There were a number of F-5's that were transferred from the Air Force to Aggressor Squadron VMFT-401. The F-5's lost the hyphen in their serials to create their BuNo's. For example, 73-0881 became 730881. I suspect that the screener saw a serial with a hyphen in conjunction with USA - Navy and kicked it back. I have no guidelines on this specific issue from the more senior editors, but my suspicion would be that the screener was correct, and that the reg should be 603614. I do encourage the more senior editors to confirm or correct, however.

In issues that probably didn't result in the rejection, but which it would be preferable to fix, that Generic Type is not terribly generic. "Bell 204 (UH-1B)" is not what I'd like, but it's the closest to what I'd like with a significant number of entries extant in the database. The original Version you submitted is good enough, I think. Also, cn is 260, code is 319.

Information about this helicopter can be found on Midway's hangar Status Board, on Midway's Hangar The Aircraft and Joe Baugher's USAF serials website.

Summary: Bell HU-1B-BF Iroquois 60-3614 (c/n 260) was a US Army helicopter. Type redesignated UH-1B-BF in 1962. Transported to USS Midway Museum, San Diego, CA. on June 3, 2004 after being restored at Gillespie Field. It is painted in the markings of the HAL-3 Seawolves.

In my opinion the upload information should be:

USA - Navy
Bell 204B (UH-1B)
Bell UH-1B-BF Iroquois (Note: not HU-)
Off-Airport - San Diego - USS Midway Museum
USA - California, June 6, 2005
Reg: 60-3614
Code: 319
Cn: 260
MILITARY,HELICOPTER,PRESERVED
In the remarks: This is a former US Army helicopter painted in the markings of the HAL-3 Seawolves.

Further research reveals that this helo is an ex-civilianised one. It was registered as N70264 from April 1978 until April 1994 to the Ventura County Fire Protection Distr., Camarillo CA. So probably she has acted as a firefighter before being restored for the USS Midway Museum.

Also it looks like a problem with the location. It should read Off-Airport - San Diego

From the help file:
When your picture has not been made at an airfield, heliport, or seaplane base, but e.g. at an off-airport exhibition, an off-airport museum, a helicopter off-heliport, etc., use the format:
"Off-Airport" followed by space dash space and the appropriate name of the city, lake, sea, river, area, etc.

Examples:
Off-Airport - Los Angeles
Off-Airport - Mont Blanc
Off-Airport - Pacific Ocean
Off-Airport - Lake Okeechobee
Off-Airport - Cochrane area

Hi Cory,

I've already pictures on the DB under 'Off-Airport - San Diego - USS Midway Museum', as before I uploaded any I took there, I searched to see what other people had entered for the location.

Both 'Off-Airport - San Diego - USS Midway Museum' and 'Off-Airport - San Diego' had previously been used, so I guess I picked the wrong one..?

Apologies for that,

John

John the correct entry is the one listed under the help file. I did see those other entries also which are incorrect. If you put USS Midway Museum in the remarks it will be searchable which is the best thing to do. We use that method for a number of other things too so that they can be searched like "Paris Air show 2005" or "MAKS 2005" etc. Hope that helps.
