Hi all

first off all, I am glad that I at least one of my photos, taken few weeks ago with my 25 years old Nikon, got accepted to A.N.

The other 3 photos got rejected with different reasons, which I don't really understand. Perhaps you can clear up a little bit.

1. rejected with NOA-size and NOA-centered

http://www.airliners.net/procphotos/...=60266_easyjet_A319_BSL05_1024.JPG

"The size of these photo(s) is too small or they have a very unusual width/height ratio. Uploaded images should be at least 1000 pixels wide and at least 667 pixels high for landscape format photos, or 1000 pixels high (the longerside) for portrait format photos. The width/height ratio should be in the region of 3:2 or 4:3 …."

The size of the photo is 1024 x 678 which gives a ratio of 1.51. Isn't that in the region of 3:2 - or are this 4 or 5 additional pixels absolutely necessary ? There are quiet a lot of other photos (also of mines) with a similar ratio in the database.

"The main subject of these photo is not correctly centered in the image"

Hmm, the aircraft seems to me perfectly centered - perhaps a little bit more grass below and less sky above. Could it be that ?

2. rejected with NOA-Quality

http://www.airliners.net/procphotos/...me=60273_Hello_MD90_BSL05_1024.JPG

The slide is clear and sharp but I have no clue how I can improve the scanned version. I think quality-rejected photos are quiet difficult to improve to A.N.-standard.

3. rejected contrast

http://www.airliners.net/procphotos/...268_HapagLloyd_B737_BSL05_1024.JPG

"The photos seem to have a too low or too high contrast setting. Too low settings result in whites that are not pure white, or blacks that are not pure black. The image looks "flat". Too high contrast settings result in very strong differences between dark and light areas in the image, and usually in very strange-looking colours. The image looks very "hard".

Probably I have to reduce the contrast, but I am afraid by doing that the general aspect of the photo with the relatively dark sky get lost. I don’t feel like to do that, I love it, like it is ….

Specially the rejection 2 and 3 made my decision to remove all my other recently taken photos from the queue as it has got obviously rather difficult for scanned photos to meet the high quality standards of AN - a matter of chance.

I have absolutely no problem with the rejections and the high standards: my few recently taken photos I will upload to MyAv and the matter is closed. In no way the quality standards of A.N. should decrease! If later I get additional spare time I can still try once again.

thanks for your attention and regards
Eduard

Hi Eduard,

1st: You should not take the copyright bar into account with the size. It's 1024x666 excl. the bar. 3:2 is 1024x683. 17 pixels less. Since this is a slide, which is 3:2, the result should be possible to be sized 1024x683 (695 incl. copyright bar), right?
About centered: the plane is low in the frame.

2nd:
It looks like the original was not completely sharp, but further sharpening will only cause more jaggies...

3rd:
Hmm... I don't know what reasoning the screener had...

Hope this helps...
Cheers,
Eduard

Hi Eduard,

I agree with Eduard here on the first two.

About the second one, it seems to me as it has a blueish tint to the whole photo, as well as being pretty low in contrast!

I tried playing around a little with it in PS, and you could either try to use the Auto-color function which seems to work pretty well in this case, or a rough estimate with the manual color balance is +6 towards red, and 6 towards yellow. Bump up the contrast by about 6 stops, and it looks a lot better in my opinion.

However, I do believe that the engine number 2 is slightly overexposed.

Regards and good luck,

Sebastian

I guess that's what happens in the end, you start thinking about the beginning.

Hi Eduard and Sebastian

Thanks a lot for your explanations. 1 and 3 will try to solve and upload later again. I'll keep you informed.

regards
Eduard

Sorry, but why are you telling us about three photos you are taking out of the queue? It looks like you did the right thing with them. Am I missing something else here? Are we all to tell the world when we do something like this, or is there another message underlying?

Curious, nothing more.

Sorry, I just realized I meant to say the "third" one of course, not the second one! Sorry!

Jeff

I had just a few other shots in the queue, which I removed instantly after the rejection of the 3 above mentioned photos. I will have a look at them and if necessary rescan them (I have learned a lesson here....).

Just for info: the second photo (the Hello MD-90) I have rescanned, as the slide itself is sharp and clear - but with setting the scanner to 'underexposure'. I have got indeed a better scan.

Eduard

Eduard,

Did you write in the comment field about them being scanned from slides?
It is worth adding this information.

Ian.

If I could just get the afterburner working...

no I didn't. I expect(ed) that the same rules for all uploaded photos of current subjects are applied, regardless of their origin (digital or scan).

Anyway thanks for this advice.

Eduard
