As a Houstonian.....you have my sympathy.

That said, there are quite a few DFW spotters here so I'll let them field those questions. As for DAL, w this airport is for the most part populated by WN with occasional COEX ERJ as well as corporate aircraft, there is also one (possibly 2) aircraft refurbishing facilities at DAL that handle everything from Gulfstreams to 747SPs, so you might get lucky and spot a Tristar being done over for a Middle Eastern head of state.

There is one really nice area to shoot from if you have the equipment. So far (at least here on A.Net) I am the only one to use this spot. The parking garage at DAL has a very nice roof top making for some wonderful photographic possibilities. The only thing is that you need (in my opinion anyways) a 400mm or larger lens to get the a nice shot of planes landing from the South with the Dallas skyline as a backdrop. The only times of the year to get these shots are during the Fall,Winter and early Spring when frequent Cold fronts move through area and the landing patterns are switched from the South.

Type in the photo id# below on the A.Net homepage
78564

This was taken in early April last year just a few hours after a cool front had moved through the area. I shot this with a 400mm 2.8 with a 1.4 teleconverter making this a 560mm f 4 shot.

C'mon on down to IAH sometime, the spotting is better down here anyways!

Good luck,

Thomas

Had to give you some grief Thomas, all you folks down in Houston are still pissed off about Singapore Airlines Cargo and now a Mainland China Cargo carrier starting service to DFW and not IAH..........I've read all your crying on the Yahoo IAH spotter's page........so quit crying..........okay, now that I have given you grief over all that............DFW is a good place to spot and photograph and so is Love Field, plus, we also have Alliance Airport and Meacham Airfield in Fort Worth. Mark, please feel free to e-mail me and I'll be more than happy to give you some spots to shoot at. However, it is just too dang hot to shoot right now !!

At least at IAH they get KLM and BA 747-400's.......that is one thing we don't get up here at DFW. But we do get Korean Airlines 747-400's, Atlas Air 747-400's and China Airlines Cargo 747-400's and 200's !!

Plus at IAH, you can get the CO Peter Max 777, which I still need to get a photo of..........

Yeah, yeah, indeed while we may bitch and complain at least our board is active where the DFW board is virtually dead Wink/being sarcastic. Also we have learned to be patient and are biding our time, we know that your days are numbered.

You may have stolen SQ Cargo out from under our feet, but we still have AI in the offing unless that Bush loving, K. Bailey Hutchinison puts another damn road block up like she did 5 years ago to stop their proposed DEH/LHR/IAH service(they already have landing rights) Angry! FYI, BA goes twice daily next Spring, AF upgrades IAH service, BWIA is pending and BM has already stated that they plan an IAH service......now it just a question of when! Another thing to remember is that our foreign pax service is not dependent upon partnerships and alliances, as CO is not apart of any alliance.....at this point! Just wait to the massive new cargo ramp goes on line sometime later next year.....25 747s back to back, maybe then it will be payback time! Big thumbs up

One thing I do give DFW credit for is your airport authority board, these guys are great! Big thumbs up It is time to sack the entire HAS board starting with DeSoto Pissed on down to the most insignificant employee, and bring in those geniuses from DFW. The loss of SQ to you guys was the last straw as far as I am concerned. Pissed

Dont' forget we still have Martinair, Cargolux, Lan Chile Cargo.

I'll probably be up there (for shooting purposes sometime in late Sept or Oct, then you and I can go 'round and round' Laugh out loud .

But at the end of the day neither DFW or IAH will ever rank up to a JFK or LAX or LHR standards, perhaps ORD and MIA

Oh yeah, we are a base of operations for Volga Nepr and Heavylift's AN124s. It's not unusual to see 2 or 3 here at once!

And don't forget the frequent 744's, SP's, BBJ's, 707's, etc. from the Middle East visiting IAH. They seem to come to IAH several times a month.

Okay Thomas, you've made some good points, but, DFW and DAL is still home to two airlines that have good size hubs, plus DL and their "mini hub"..........I still think the DFW Airport will continue to out-pace IAH since we draw from both the greater Dallas and Fort Worth areas, combined, while IAH only has "Houston proper" to draw from. I just think the overall DFW population base is larger and that will help us over IAH any time.

Can't wait to meet you this fall and I can tell you how great DFW is over IAH..........ha ha !!

Hi Mark,

This rivalry between Houston and Dallas has been going on for more years than I care to remember, but it is more good natured jabbing than anything else!

All 4 airports (IAH/HOU-DFW/DAL) have their positive an negatives when it comes to spotting. But overall they are both really lame when it comes to diversity of airlines and aircraft. Hubs are nice, but I certinly do miss the pre-hub era, with airlines like National, Eastern, Western, Pan Am, Braniff, Texas International, ect......There was certainly a lot more to look at as well as to photograph.

Jay, if you want to discuss this further, please drop me an e-mail. I just don't think that many here are all that interested in the 'airport wars' of Houston and Dallas.

Later,

Thomas

DFW rules!!!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

it will especially when they open the new int'l terminal...and any other terminals they plan on building...another thing is that DFW has the space to grow...i don't think IAH has as much room to grow as DFW does...I do wish that DFW had the variety of int'l airlines that IAH does, such as KLM...the BA 744, etc. DFW has a lot to offer...but i would like to see more variety at DFW...i hope this new terminal attracts some new service...hopefully from some more oneworld members and possibly Swissair since AA and SR are kinda close and the DFW-ZRH route is doing great...anyway just my $.02...by the way i don't think IAH has service from SABENA do they?

there are multiple places to spot at...you should try and get up on the ramp tower, i know some guys up there that are shooters like me! you can also contact airport ops about a ramp tour...they'd be glad to take you out there. you should email josh rawlin at jrawlin@hotmail.com about spotting at DFW...he could help you out tremendously...hope this helps

Hi Jonathan,

Actually IAH still has a great deal of space left for future growth. Our 5th runway is currently under construction and a 6th is being proposed. Continental like AA at DFW is currently involved in the construction of it's own int'l terminal,(though I don't believe it will be quite the size of AA's new facility at DFW). This will free up D (IAB) for the current international carriers to expand ops as well as intice additional carriers.

The only real stumbling block to IAH's growth is the overall incompetence of HAS and their histoic short sightness. Check the link below for a brief history and future of IAH, here one can easily see that IAH's past has been plagued with problems and poor planning. Frankly, I would love for BAA, SCHIPOL, ADP or some other organization to come in and show HAS how to market an airport effectively.

http://www.texasfreeway.com/houston/airport/airport.shtml

Does DFW actually offer tours on the ramp ? Wow.....score another point for DFW! HAS won't even consider such a thing. Hell, from what I was told they even chased either Airways or Airliners magazines (I can't remember which) when they proposed doing a profile of IAH. As you might guess, I have no love for these clowns.

I do concede that IAH will never overtake or even match DFW on domestic services, simply because of geography. I am confindent however that IAH will hold on to its lead in the int'l numbers (barring any screwups by HAS). The reason for this is mainly due the fact that the Houston metro area is a more culturally and ethnically diversified area than the DFW Metroplex. And even the Port of Houston has a role to play in this.

And no, SB does not have flights into IAH. SR has longed talk of an IAH service, but with their alliance with DL as well as KE and JL's membership in the 'Oneworld' alliance flights from these carriers into IAH is at best poor.
