Finally have decided to join the "fray" after reading the site for awhile..
Anyway - just purchased a new nikon 80-200 f/2.8D zoom for my D70s. Yesterday went to the local airport (CYMM) to try it out.
The autofocus went nuts when tracking inbound aircraft - would often take off to macro from infinity...if I kept the shutter pushed down it would come back.
I tried changing focus area from the local spot setting to dynamic area, but it didn't seem to help. It was cloudy in the background.

Have you checked the manual?
It might be that D70s doesn't like to be paired with that lens. Is it the regular 2-ring zom, or the AF-S variant?
I used to have a 80-200 f2,8 (2-ring model) and it worked flawlessly on my D70. Try different AF-settings and see if that changes anything.

The only time my Nikkor 80-200 2.8 acted like that is when I used the TC. If I am using just the lens it works perfectly. Focuses fast as hell and is sharp.

I use the old style push/pull single ring on my D70, no problems, works flawlessly. Make sure the lens is all the way screwed on. My wife did this once and the lens was acting weird. I had to turn the lens all the way on and it started to work great.
