Hey everyone,
My 70-200 F4L has been acting up lately, producing soft and blury photos quite often, even in good lighting conditions and high shutter speeds/f stops. Its only 7 months old so I'm planning on sending it back to Canon for warranty service.
What are everyone's experience with lens servicing? I'm assuming it will take them a good month to work on it, does that sound about right? If so I guess I'll be back to using my old 75-300 USM for a while.
Also, I know everyone raves about how the 70-200 series are so incredible. That's why I'm surprised at the results recently. Also, what are your experiences using this lens with the 1.4X teleconverter? I just got a 1.4 and this seems to aggrivate the softness problems even more. It seems like the AF doesn't play well with it most of the time.

I think Big Foot is blurry, Its not the photographers fault. Theres a large out of focus monster roaming the countryside

I am currently waiting for Canon to fix and return my 100-400. So far, its been a great experience. The telephone service was fantastic. They are real curtious to the customer on the phone.
I SHOULD be getting it back in probably a week. I'll let you know how it turned out when I have the lens back in my bag.

Hey Joe, I don't have any experience with Canon customer service, but I do have the 70-200f/4. I love the lens and bought the cheap Tamron 1.4 converter just to see what it's like. It works way better than expected. I had my first session using the TC last weekend and I have some shots in the queue, so I will post them here in a week if they get in. Sounds like there is a problem if you have no AF with a 1.4 TC. Mine 'hunted' a few times but only for a split second. Good luck getting it fixed.

I had a terrible experience with Canon repair center here in Switzerland. Took 2 month to get my 100-400 back, costed me about 400 pounds and worked only about a month before it had the exact same problem again. Pissed me of so much.
Returned it to the shop and they sended it to another shop for the repair. Costed me nothing and was ready in about 3 weeks. And it's working perfectly since then.

The 70-200 f4L is very sharp, and remains sharp even with the cheap Tamron 1.4x teleconverter. The problem is that I've found the 70-200+1.4x combo much harder to hand-hold at full zoom than the lens alone. Maybe because of the stop of light that is lost, maybe because of the 280mm, but it's much much easier to get motion blur, that I often confused with softness in the beginning. Sound stupid, but "make sure you're using appropriate shutter speeds" (tm).

ACtually got my lens back today.
It was shipped in a very secure box with plenty of bubble wrap and paper. The lens seems to be fixed 100%! I took a couple sample shots with it and was pleased with the results. They told me what was fixed and gave me a 6 month guarantee.
In case you're wondering: My Lens was repaired in the Jamesburg, NJ office.

Adam, I'll be sending mine to the Jamesburg, NJ office too. I'm only about 40 miles away in NE Philly, so I'm considering driving it up there, but I don't feel making the 2 hour round trip.
ManuCH, I also noticed things get a lot trickier with the 1.4X attached. However, my lens has been acting soft/out of focus even without the 1.4X on. Last time I was shooting the sun was getting low so I upped to 200 ISO so I could keep F8 and 1/640th, so shutter speed shouldn;t have been a problem.
I just tried cleaning the contacts on the lens and camera. I'm going shooting again on Sunday so I'll see how things go.

I wouldn't make the 2 hour trip. I shipped mine via UPS in secure packing and insured it to the value i payed for it. Also, I wrote out a VERY discriptive letter telling them what was wrong and gave them the contact info so if there was ANY confusion, I could be contacted right away.
