Hello folks,

I've recntly joined the A.net community, (but i've been surfing here since 99). But now I've joined the photog community but I havent been able to get any of my shots onto A.net, which is really upsetting. I have inluded a link to my site here to where you can see my reject shots, and leave comments on what I can do to improve them. Heres the link

Also, a basic question that is probably asked over and over, camera type, all of these shots were on a Fuji Finepix, a345 a simple no nonsense digi cam wiht 4mp's. But what I want to know is will that camera hold up to spotting at BOS, at the show on the 29th? I plan on bringing that, and an *older* cannon thats being handed down to me. The cannon is not digital btw.

Also, scans, how do I do them? I'll scan a picture into P.Shop, then I cant get it to do anythig like rotate, enlarge, etc..

I am everything but a professional or a screener, nevertheless I had a look at your photos and here are some things I noticed:

The first image "US Air A319" is a little soft and noticeably grainy. Also there seems to be a little heat haze involved??? I think ramp shots are always tough per se, but all the equipment visible in the foreground and under the wing and the jet bridge doesn't help at all (especially since an US A319 is not exactly a rare bird...). Plus: at which size did you upload? For the beginning, try to keep resizing the pictures so that they are 1024 pix wide (stick to an side aspect ratio of either 3:2 or 4:3).

The next picture "bye bye aua" is very hazy and out of focus (especially the lower part). Also there just isn't something "eyecatching" in the pic, if you know what I mean...

Next one "us air a319". You wrote:"I thought it was unique, smoke/steam filled cabin.... screeners diddnt". Problem is: It really is not unique and happens rather often. In addition, you didn't take a photo of the whole cabin, but of a (rather randomly chosen???) part of the ceiling (including faces of fellow travelers), making it (at least for me) kind of "bad motive".

I also had a closer look of the 6th and 8th photo in the row (people visiting a FedEx A300). I like the head-on photo a lot, but unfortunately all the people in front of the aircraft make it "bad motive" again, I think. Plus, the photos are heavily backlit, a little grainy again and seem to suffer from heat haze. On some edges chromatic aberration (purple fringing) is also noticeable.

Please don't let this discourage you (and take everything I said with a grain of salt, as I said I am no expert myself!).
What help can I give? Mostly, the standard: try to get as close as possible to the subject (for avoiding heat haze as much as possible). Try to avoid pics with distracting clutter or ground equipment in front of the plane (I know that is VERY easy said... Wink ). Try to take pictures in good lighting conditions (sun behind you). I think there is not much you can do about chromatic aberration as this depends on your camera...

Most important: don't give up, and post your results, so we can discuss them here...

P.S.: Just read in another thread about your disappointment that all 16 pics you submitted were rejected. I think all photographers can understand your feelings. In the same post you wrote that you appealed all rejections. This is something I wouldn't recommend. It causes work for the crew, costs their time and your time and won't help you (especially if the rejections were clear). Better show us your photos BEFORE submitting them. Saves everyone's time and helps you improving your photos much more... Just an advice Big grin

Not to rain on your parade or anything, but I believe the "Airline Show" in Boston on the 29th is in a hotel: http://www.justplanes.com/BOSShow.html(unless you are referring to something else). It is really just a room where you can speak with vendors offering airliner memorabilia and collectables etc. . If you plan on spotting Boston while you are there, there are many great places you can go, including Castle Island & Winthrop. I wouldn't suggest shooting on the airport property as security is pretty tight.

Remembering my (mostly useless  banghead  ) attempts to take pictures of the aircraft on static display at this years' Airbus family day, I know very well that taking photos on such occasions can be a pain in the a**, to say at least.
In my understanding people in the photo are not a problem as long as their faces are not recognizable (for understandable reasons) and as long as they are not blocking the subject of interest (aka the aircraft).
I think these two photos illustrate this point quite well:

You can see many people and other things like cars or fences in the picture but they are not obstructing the view on the plane.
How this can be archived on an occasion like your FedEx open house where people are literally everywhere??? I wish I had a clue... (Maybe just grab a megaphone and ask the few hundred people to step aside for a second or two to let the spotters do their work...  Wink ). The only real possibility would be close-ups of the nose, the tail, the engines etc, I think...

With the pics you have on that website, I would recommend you to rework the FedEx tail shot (smaller, to start with, and sharper), and see where you get with that. It's going to be tough if your original has a chopped-off horizontal stabiliser, though. In my very personal opinion, I don't think any of the others have a chance around here, for many reasons but mainly motive. I know it doesn't sound nice, but just have at shots that are in the database, and try to analyse why they did make it. Your pics should have similar features in order to be accepted...

If it means anything: before I got my first (very ordinary) picture accepted, I thought I had the most unique shots all the time and was quite annoyed with the rejections. But that doesn't help anyway.

I hate to say this, but I've had similar models from Fuji (both above and below yours) and it's going to be difficult to get those photos looking good enough for A.net. I'm not saying it's impossible, but you'll want to spend a lot of time working with Photoshop or a similar program on a computer with a really good monitor. Few if any cameras take photos good enough for A.net without at least a little post-processing, but the basic Fuji models are tougher to work with IMO.

You can also do a search on the forums for more. Even google should have some. Keep track of what works best for you and your camera and then create your own workflows as you get better.

Just a point that I noticed there that Photoshop 5.5 will not have alot of the photo editing features that the newer versions of PhotoShop will have for example version 6 or later. Even the later version of PhotoShop Elements seems to be ok. I read that alot of A.netters use that and it seems to work well for them. The bonus is with Photshop Elements is that its less than half the cost of the full photoshop.

The camera should be ok seeing that you are going to be at an airshow. Avoid taking shots from a long way away with that camera. You'll basically only be able to shoot close static displays. As an example, I have one shot in the DB that I took with a FinePix 2800Z and is one of my most viewed pics!

Looking thru some of your shots there which are good too, but I noticed that alot of them are cluttered. Try to avoid that. It is hard but now and then you will be able to get the odd few without clutter. Try to avoid shooting aircraft when they are at gates. Unless the pics are for your own collection, they may have trouble getting accepted here.

But more importantly - go to the airshow and have fun, don't take pics just to get accepted here. Take shots for you. Get them home and if the fall into the requirements for here then upload. If you want help with editing, let us know here. There's many here that will help you get things started. So stay positive and you'll be rewarded. Remember not to be scared of asking for help on these forums. Thats what they are there for.
