Before the transition to USAirways begins, I'd like to get over to PHX and shoot as much HP as I can. Probably sometime within the next month. It's been a couple years since I've done any photography at PHX, and the T3 parking garage was my favorite spot. Is this still considered a good (hassle-free) place to shoot from?
Are there any better places to shoot from? If there are some decent perimeter spots, I can rent a car...but the spot has to be REALLY good for me to spend the money!

I shot at PHX about a week ago on a few different days. For HP stuff, Terminal 4 garage was best. I also used Terminal 3 garage the day I was leaving along with some from inside the terminal. My shots from Phoenix are all on JetPhotos.net. I uploaded a good number of them....

When are you planning to stop by spot at Phoenix Sky Harbour Airport. I have not spotted at PHX for a long time so I woundn't mind showing you around for the day if the schedule works out. Typically the best time to spot at PHX is in the winter starting November till late February. You can spot from T2 all the way to T4 but the following sequence is probably the best since you won't be shooting into the sun. T2 is best from 7:00am till 10:00pm. Take-offs and and landing shots. T3 is good from 10:00am till 2:00pm with aircraft taxiing. Although the bridge shot is probably gone since the new control tower is being build in between and a lot of construction is going on. T4 is great from 2:00pm till sunset with taxiing aircraft but great for approach and landing shots.
Here are some examples of T2, T3, and T4 respectively:
The airport police is very friendly and typically they will do their rounds just to check-up on spotters and take down info. They are very friendly and great people to talk with. Well I hope this will help you answer some of your questions.

Hi Scooter,I was there last weekend and spoted from the T3 garage from Noon to 430pm and had no problems. You still can get taxiway shots from T3 but you have to do it on a angle now.The new control tower is being built right now.I may go back there in Early dec.
What kind of lens did you use for those shots at PHX? Also did you get hassled by airport police at all, because I am going to PHX in a couple of week.
I was using a 135-400mm for the long stuff, 18-55mm for the close ups. I don't think I shot at more than 300mm the whole week.
I didn't have any problems with the airport police. I was there for 4 hours on one day, 2 another, and 3 on my final day and never even got approached. I utilized www.cactuswings.com for the viewing areas and times of day to shoot from there. Excellent reference.
Quoting Scooter (Reply 4): Great stuff Rich, thanks. I've never tried the T4 garage, but it looks like I might have to check that out.
Thank you! I shot from T4 last year and was very pleased with it. The purpose this time around was to get alot more America West birds before they start changing liveries. Don't know when I'll have a chance to get back there before they do, so made it a point to utilize T4 right above the HP ramp.
Next time around I want to do some early morning later evening photographing, Phoenix has some awesome sunrises and sunsets.

Well, the weather here in southern California sucked today, so I decided to hop a plane over to PHX for the afternoon. First of all, I have to say, NEVER trust weather.com. The forecast for PHX was "sunny" (not "partly" or "mostly" sunny), but there was one HUGE cloud that hung over PHX all afternoon that really pissed me off. The saving grace was that the sunset was beautiful...so I did manage to get some nice shots.
Long story short, the T4 parking garage location ROCKS. I brought my 100-400 with me, but I hardly ever shot anything right at 400mm. Thanks to everyone here who reccomended that location. I was up there (8th level) for about 4 hours total, and I was never approached by security or the police. It's a great spot, and I'm definitely going back a couple more times over the winter.
The HP "Ohio" 757 still eludes me...that was the one plane I was hoping to get a nice shot of today, but it wasn't meant to be.
