Apart from buying the Nikon D50-kit, I'm also looking for a good and not too expensive telelens: which one of the two mentioned would you choose and why ?

I'm currently using the Sigma 70-300 APO DG as this came out best within my budget (over the similar priced Canon/Tamron equivalents) in the many reviews I read when deciding which lens to buy for my 300D. The lens suffers, like most at this price ($250-$300), from softness at full zoom, but other than that, I'm more than pleased. The DG lenses do not have the compatabilty issues that affected earlier Sigma models and I've had no problems with any of its functions.

cheers

Andrew Scott

I can say nothing about the Tokina, but I bought the Sigma 70-300 APO as a 'portable' lens for my Asia trip, and I'm quite pleased with it on my D70.
This was shot at max focal length and I wasn't expecting anything:

I'm told it's considerably better than the non-APO-version (better colour).

I owned the Sigma 70-300 APO (in fact it was my first long zoom) but after using it for a year I sold it as the lens did hunt a lot in low light situations, which is not a good thing given the weather in the Netherlands. Basically I found out that the lens did not very well for me in low light situations. I do think the 70-300 is a good buy for the money. This lens is in high demand and you can probably sell it for a good price if you get bored with it.

But...

If you can find an extra $200 you might be able to pick up a second hand nikkor 80-200/F2.8 from one of the auction sites. I guarantee you that you will never sell that lens again as it is an more than excellent professional quality lens (although a bit heavy). Nikon has been building this lens for years in various versions and now the 70-200VR is on the market the 80-200 is dumped for very low prices.

Roel is right. I love my secondhand Nikkor 80-200.
However, if you do much traveling without a car, the 80-200's size and weight can be a serious issue.
