...Is there any shop i really have to have a look at other than B&H?
Preferrably in Manhattan, that is.

Unfortunatly i don´t think there´ll be time for spotting, as i´ll bring my mom
with me and she can probably think of one or two other things to do, while in New York...

I had a bad experience with the smaller camera stores in NYC. Including one that went out of business and used the credit card I bought my 80-400 with to charge something I never bought. From now on it's either B&H or Adorama for me. I forgret where Adorama is. Those are the only two I would send you to.

Thanks,
i will take a look at adorama also. As the prices seem to be quite similar,
(at least for the Nikon 17-55mm) i´ll go with whatever i like better, or who
has in stock what i need (or want...200-400mm.... fever  ) .

Vasco, 16% VAT?
got this from the b&h website:

We do not collect tax for orders shipped out of New York State. Purchases in our store are subject to an 8.375% local sales tax. This tax is not a VAT, and cannot be recovered by non-USA visitors when returning home.

I guess it means 8,375% INSTEAD of 16%, right?

Anyway, it´s still going to be cheaper than here in germany...

If you want to go in/out quickly and don't have time to wait in line I'd suggest Adorama. The store is much (and I stress much) smaller than B&H but I can be in/out in 5 minutes vs. the longer wait (not always) at B&H. However, B&H is a must see if you do have time. That place is always fun and you could easily spend all day there. When shopping locally for gear, I only use the above two stores.

Adorama is on 18th Street between 5th & 6th.

Beechcraft, B & H is an amazing place, you should should be very happy and entertained their, just a tip you many not be aware of, they and most of the NYC camera stores close around 1400 on Friday and all day Saturdays for religious observances. They also sometimes have other Holiday closings for the same reason, double check that on their website when your planning your dates.

Cheers

Denis, what I meant is if you are returning to Germany you have to pay 16% VAT and duties (7%) unless you do not declare it. This might be kind of risky. If they catch you and find out that you are an airline pilot, you could be in deep trouble.

And it does not matter if they don't catch you this time.......if they do in 2 months from now you are still in deep shit!

I am not sure if you can get the 8.375% sales tax refunded, you might want to call them prior to your visit.

I just did some research, taken from the US embassy site UK:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sales Tax in the United States

The Embassy often gets requests for information about "refunds of sales tax" for purchases made in the U.S.

There is no national tax system in the United States such as V.A.T. Instead, sales taxes are assessed individually by state and city, and each state has complete autonomy in administering its taxes. Thus, to request a refund of state sales tax, you must apply to the individual state where the purchases were made. We have been advised that Louisiana is the only state which provides a refund for sales tax for international visitors for goods purchased at participating stores, and in several other states no sales tax is charged if the visitor does not take direct possession of items purchased but has them shipped directly out of the state.

You may wish to get in touch with one of the tax offices in whatever state you made your purchase.

We regret that there is no office in the Embassy which can help you further.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

So you are correct, that you won't get the sales tax refunded.
