My EOS300D Stopped Working, Need Urgent Help!

To all,

Today when photographing with my Canon EOS300D camera it stopped focussing all of a sudden. I used every setting from automatic to manual and in all setting I got the same result. When I lightly press the top button on the right so the camera can sharpen the photo before the picture is taken (the sound you here when the camera is ready to take the picture), the camera starts loosing its focussing ability after which no photo can be taken. In other words, the camera can't focus anymore (the five red lights in the viewing screen don't appear). I don't understand this as I haven't done anything unusual or out of the ordinary to make the camera do this. It just happened!

Can anyone help me out here, because without mt camera I'm useless. It was a really big investment for me, the camera is only one year and three months old and I loved very minute I used it. Has anybody here with the Canon EOS300D encountered this particular problem? What went wrong? Is it the software in the camera or something else? Can it be fixed?

I was planning a vacation to Holland and Miami to take lots of aircraft photos which will also cost me a lot of money, but now my camera isn't working  Sad  Sad  Sad

Regards,

Roger (a very sad photographer now)  Sad

The same thing happened to me a while back, the lens would just not focus...

I took off the lens, Took out the battery and then put them back on and it seemed to work fine again...

Maybe be a stupid question but have you tried this?

Try a few things..... taking all things (battery, lens) off and putting them back on in a few hours. Also, is your sensor cleaned well? Does the lens have any dirt/residue inside, as it may lead to bad focus.

If nothing helps.... MF always works!

Get a q-tip and some pharmacy grade iso alcohol. Clean the contacts on the camera and les body where they connect.

Hmm, never tried that.

I use a pencil eraser and wipe it off with a basic lens cleaning cloth. Obviously, taking care not to get any of the eraser residue inside the housing.

u know what.. id suggest one thing

dont do anythging stupid.. if you do it might void your Canon Warranty...

yes at 1yr 3mths.. warrranty is over but i think bringing it back to you CAnon dealer and getting them to fix it is the best option..

my shutter broke. liek the mirror that opens and blocks the sensor actually snapped off on my camear.. it wsa loose in my cam.. i brought it back free fix....

the same happened to me i dropped my 17-40L and it wouldnt' focus anymore even thoguh both products were past a year my 300D and the lens. i brought both back to fix. it ended up my 300D was kinda borken on the AF and i paid like HKD300? to fix.. thats like 40USD

bring it back. don do anythign stupid cuz it coudl screw your cam over more.. and canon might blame you for somethign you didnt have anythign to do with

Thanks for the tips. I have taken off everything and cleaned it. My problem is that I bought the camera in Holland and I live in the Caribbean now where we don't have a Canon shop or any Canon representatives. I can only bring it to a local photo store but I'm not sure if they can fix it here as I've never seen the EOS300D here. A few weeks ago I went looking for stores that might sell the EOS300D or any other bigger more expensive camera used by us aircraft photographers but with no luck. What to do, I'm really sad as it cost me a fortune  Sad

I followed the tips and cleaned the camera and took it lense off, but the camera is still not focussing. I will bring it to a local photo shop to see what they can do. It really bothers me that there's no Canon shop here or anywhere near. Is there a Canon shop in Miami? I think that is the closest city in my case. I have a feeling that this is going to be very expensive? Are there any good deals on the Canon EOS350D camera? I was thinking about buying that camera but have to see how I can buy it. As I will be travelling to Amsterdam via Miami is it recommended to buy a Canon EOS350D camera at a tax-free shop at MIA Airport? How does it work with guarantees as I live outside the U.S.?

Roger

This is a very decent store in Miami. About 6-7 miles south of the airport and just down SR 826 and US 1 (hence is easy to reach from airport). I am not sure if they repair but if you call them up, they may point you in the right direction.

They do sell equipment,too..and alot of photo stuff..etc

I have a friend with a 300D who had the same thing happen. He never did get it fixed, and used manual focus. He's since replaced the camera with a 20D.

What does the shot look like in manual focus? Can you see the entire frame of a photo? My camera stopped autofocusing while I was in LAX in October. Turned out to be a spring broke to the sub-mirror and when I took a pic in manual focus, the shot would be 4/5 black. If this is the case with you, you need a new submirror spring installed. I had mine fixed with an extended warranty and it came back fine 3 weeks later.

My camera doesn't even work in manual mode so something is broke in the camera I think. I have two Canon lenses and the camera does the same with both lenses. I also have a feeling that the sub-mirror inside the camera broke. I did test the camera a few days ago in manual mode but as I normally never use the full manual mode it surprises me that it breaks so fast. I was trying to make night photos of the moon when I used the full manual mode.

If I decide to go for the Canon EOS350D camera, can I use the same lenses I have now? I currently have two Canon lenses I bought when I bought the EOS300 camera. How about the memory cards, can I use the same memory cards I now use for my EOS300D camera? I currently have two memory cards of 512 MB.

Regards,

Roger

Thanks for the tips Viv. Does anyone know on-line stores in the Miami area where I can buy the EOS350D camera on-line using a credit card? The Canon website doesn't show prices but only product descriptions. I'm interested in the prices. As this is the best way to buy a new digital camera at the "closest" city near me, it will have to do this. As I live in a foreign country/island, is delivery outside the U.S. possible?

Thanks for links TACAA320,

I live in Curacao which is an island in the Caribbean, so I hope it is possible to order a camera on-line from here. I will check it out later as I'm at work now and it's bussy.

Does anyone know if Canon has a website where foreigners can buy a camera on-line? I've been looking on the Canon website but all I get is a registration to become a member and apparently you need to live in the U.S. to register.

Any tips on other quality on-line stores is welcome.

Wow, thanks for the link TACAA320. I also looked at the prices in Europe but the prices in Europe are much higher. How reliable is the company you just mentioned (B&H)? I came across a website which had great offers but when I wanted to contact them I saw their email address was a Yahoo address which I find suspicious. I don't know how much I can trust all these on-line stores, especially because I have to pay a lot of money in this case. I will look around on the island tomorrow to see what I can find here. Probably the prices will be higher here as these type of cameras are not common here. It's a dilemma, I have to figure everything out before I will make my buying decision. But thank you for your help so far amigo Big grin

Saludos,

A388
