Shutter Speed Question! Need Urgent Reply!

I am leaving tomorrow for my vacation so I kinda need some quick replys here. I have some questions about the shutter speed of my canon powershot S2 IS. Using the flash will backlight the photos so I have been trying to get to know how to shoot without the flash. If its sunny and stuff then it works fine, but when its kinda dark even in the room the pics are blurry. So I went to the manual and read that on TV you can manually set the shutter speed. Which shutter speed would be the best for me? Am I correct that the bigger the number the slower the shutter speed?

Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

Don't quite understand what you mean by the flash "backlighting" the photos.
Without knowing what kind of subjects you are photographing makes it difficult to advise.
With all due respect, with what I perceive is your level of expertise I think your vacation snaps would turn out generally better if you left you camera in program mode and let it make the decisions.

So should I use P which manually sets the Shutter speed and the aperature or should I manually switch them? When I use P do I take the pic in P or do I got to P and then back to auto? If I manually set them manually the shutter goes from 15 to 1/3200 and the aperature goes from 2.7 to 8.0. If manually then I guess I should go to M which lets me change them both so which ones should I change it to? Once in M do i change the settings and then just turn the dile to auto and the settings will be the same?

1/40 is the bigger of the two numbers. 1/4000 is the smaller of the two.

You definitely need to go get your manual and read it cover to cover. Then do the same with your camera handy.

There is always the f16 rule and it applies to film as well as digital with the added advantage on digital of seeing the results almost intantly.

I guess you have left by now but they may have something at MKE, is it a direct flight? You might find something at your connection point.. all those hours in the air you should be able to memorise the manual..

Easy honey ... , I am pretty sure you can get a book about photgraphy at PUJ. Why not start with the manual of you cam 1st? You will see it works wonders, if you know what you can do with the thing you are holding in your hand.

If the in camera flash is in the closed position on the camera your shutter speed will be very low hence the blur.
When you open the flash usually by pressing a button on the side of the camera the shutter speed will go up significantly.
But as far as knowing what speeds you need for shutter for different occasions and different light conditions .
Learn some basics of photography and take the advice of the above posters and read up on the manual.

Probably all the way up to 1/60. LOL....

When using a flash indoors, you control exposure primarily with aperture, shutter speed normally won't effect it at all.
