So, I decided today that I was going to take some photos. I have not gone in a while. Recently, well like 3-4 months ago, they put up signs: NO STOPPING OR STANDING ON ROADWAYS - $60 FINE STRICTLY ENFORCED. Which means the end of shots of planes turning onto 25 and side-ons along 35L. I figured though I was safe in the dirt lot next to Conoco. They were using 7 for arrivals. (It was really pretty out there with the storm clouds.) Anyway, I parked in the paved lot and walked out, it is not as good as walking across the road. About 10 minutes later a red unmarked vehicle pulls in. Long story short, I was given a $60 ticket and was told if I came back I would get a citation for trespassing on private property. I am fighting it, since I was not even near the roadway. It is sad however that there are now only 2 places to shoot from in DEN now.

That sucks! Now I am not overly familiar as to where the dirt lot is (I know where the Conoco lot is though), but is that dirt lot even airport property? It sounds like DEN is becoming just about as hostile as STL . Good luck in your fight against that ticket!

What agency/authority was the vehicle and person who cited you from?

There is a date set of Jul 6 if I want to fight it. I figure from now on if I want to go out and shoot, I am just going to do it from the ramp. I got some great shots of the An-124 out there today.

Quoting JeffM (Reply 1): ..big mistake, that is posted private property.....and it is for customer use. You'll get tickets like that at lots of places, nothing new.
I don't know about this particular spot, but generally it's not that easy, legally. A gas station is private land, but people that park on its grounds are "invitees," basically given a revocable license to be there. Trespass only happens when the land's owners say "get off." The police can't just show up and arrest or ticket for trespass - the owner has to ask them to. (Or, more commonly, they'll just ask you to leave and call the PD when you don't.)
Besides that, the remedy for trespass is ejectment (removing the person), and forbidding the person from doing it again, not fining $60. I'd say fight the ticket, it's probably unfounded.

Goodness gracious, what is up with the Gestapo tactics of the DEN police? Do they not have anything better to do, like go to a donut shop ????
I thought DFW Airport police were bad but we've got it made in the shade compared to what you poor folks up in DEN are dealing with.
Any way to go to the airport authorities or maybe a news station and tell them of your plight ??? Where is 60 Minutes when you need them ?
I'd fight the ticket as well, many times cops don't show up for these types of trials. Even if they do, you've gotten back at them, more or less, by making them show up in court!

This is the 1st time I've heard of anyone getting fined at DEN.
Quoting D L X (Reply 7): the owner has to ask them to.
So who is to say that the Conoco called up eariler in the day when 3 spotters were on the lot? That would be a 1st for the Conoco, however.

Looking at where I saw these signs, on 78th by the rental cars, and by the 45 minute waiting area, people were probably parking there to wait on arrivals to pick up passengers b/c the 45 minute waiting area was full.
You know Ryan, now that I think about it, they've kicked out people from the 35L before, and they told you and I in Sept 04 they'd threaten to arrest us for going on the south side of the airport. Wheather that means 35L wasn't mentioned. No tickets issued that I know of.

I don't live in DEN, but in my opinion, if you want to shoot airliners, I'd have to say that DEN is the only option you have. Jeffco doesn't get any commercial airliners does it? If you want to just shoot airplanes, that is a different story, but if you want to shoot airliners, I'm guessing DEN is the only option.
Where I live we have options of either DFW or DAL !!

Quite possible! But, still the remedy isn't a $60 fine, unless Colorado has some really unusual laws. Trespassing is not a violation - it is a crime. What does the ticket itself say?

For airliners yes, but having the 2nd busiest GA airport about 25 SW of DEN isn't too bad of an option.
An update on the signs, approaching the Terminal East garages, just after the Terminal East/West split, there are many no stopping/ no standing on roadways $60 fine signs that Ryan has mentioned. Again, I think these signs are placed around areas where people do not want to pay for parking, so they stop on, or alongside, of the roadways. I'm assuming these signs also include the shoulders of the road areas in question.

You guys like how they put a new road with a curb all along rental car road? Kind of hard to pull over and get some photos there now. As Jeff said, you can still park somewhere legal and ride a bike to that spot.
Jeffco is having an airshow on the second saturday in June... I will be taking people up in the glass 172 for discovery flights for 3 hours if anyone is interested. Take some photos of the airport while I fly you around if you want.
As for the show, not sure what all is going to be there but I am sure they will have some good stuff again as they did last year.

Was up on 120th this evening dodging clouds. I'm starting to get bored with DEN as there's not much opportunity for anything anymore except the side-on stuff. I really think we should write to ops or the city or someone to get the dirt lot by the fire station opened up as a spotting area, it could make for some neat morning/late summer evening (after the sun crosses back to the north of 7/25) shooting.
And yeah, those $60 fines are for parking along the roadways near the terminals, not tresspassing. It's posted all around Pena buelevard, pretty tough to miss.

Well actually I think it is being advertised as an open house. Last year it was pretty neat, they had runway 2/20 closed off and lots of static displays out there. F-16, T-33, a few older war birds, the news copters, P-51, Pilatus had a display along with a few other biz jets. I really thought the highlight was the mini Tuskegee Airman museum thing they had there in one of the larger tents. I got to meet a few of them and talk for a while with them, really neat for sure! They also had a few fly bys of different aircraft. Overall it was pretty neat.
I am just worried about how to take people up for rides when half the airport is closed and there are tourists walking around all over the place... Should be interesting!

It's a real shame to see this kind of thign happening.
I think the best thing to do is to give the police no excuse to ticket you, as it seems they will try anythign to shoo you folks away.
I tink about the spots that we have here by JFK where we hang out in parkinglots of Burger King or Boston Market. All we do is park, buy some food (no matter how small) and leave the bag on the hood of the car while we sit next to it. We sip from our sodas and snack on chicken nuggets and if th police come they can't claim private property because we are customers.
I can't say I'm familiar enough with the Conoco location, but is it possible to do something similar where you buy some gas and then you can say you ARE a customer and are therefore allowed to stay?

Phil, that is just it...nothing has really changed since you were here. I've been out there many times, parked, walked around, etc. It is the location where we hung out that morning, it's just an unpaved area near the gas station. I doubt it even belongs to Conoco, most likely it's the City of Denver's property, (as is the entire area for approx. 2 miles OUTSDIE the fence line). But, evidently numbnuts didn't park there....
That station is busy being the only one on airport property. As with any other establishment, parking is limited in scope to customer's only. and I'm sure they don't want you there all day, basically long enough to pay for your gas, take a leak, get some grub and move on....
In all the times I've driven into Manhatten, I know for a fact that parking in someone's lot and walking somewhere else, or leaving your car there longer then whatever is posted will result in a ticket as well, or a boot.
Not that young Mr. Ryan would mouth off, but doing so does not help your case either as I'm sure you're aware.

Yea, the one good thing about the Bolder Boulder...I was driving on 36 West just past the ridge south of town when I saw 4 of the F/A-18's come low right over us after doing the Folsom Field flyby...wish I had a camera as well!!!

T-shirts help any cause. It's a little known fact that when Washington crossed the Deleware, he had on a T-shirt stating "no fat chicks." It had a ketchup stain on it.

Here's some info
On the poster, it states F9 Airbus... that's kinda cool and warrents a visit at 7am for the arrival shot... if that's what's goin' on.
Also will be a B-25 there.
That same weekend (June 9-11), APA is having a B-17 give rides to people who want to pay well over $300. Ground tours are under $10. I'll stick to grabbing it on finals and maybe getting a cockpit shot. For more info: Go here! Also, at the Wings over the Rockies Museum, there is an "open cockpit day" on June 10, but that is a monthly event.

Do you not realize that the ticket had nothing to do with aviation photography? They couldn't give two sh*ts about what ryan was doing, he was parked illegally and just like any illegal parking violator they will issue a ticket. As a side note, since they started doing the fines for roadside parking, I've noticed that driving to the terminal seems to be much easier...wonder why.
