CTL + ALT + ~ (tilde, that little sqully thing on the extreme left top corner of the keyboard)

This selects all the highlights in the image. You will see a selection of the highlights with the little dancing ants. Then do.. Select > Inverse (Shft + CTRL + I) now you can adjust the curves or levels of only the midtones and shadows without blowing out the highlights.

For extra bright highlights or to bring out detail in white areas try this.....
Ctrl + Alt + ~

Do a light feather of the selection and then Ctrl C to copy the selection and Ctrl V to paste to a new layer.

Now you can play with this new layer of just the highlights for image correction. You can change the mode to Multiply to darken or bring out details, do an adjustment layer of curves or levels to darken.

Jeff, another great tip! Thanks.

Location of the tilde key depends on the language of the keyboard. On a UK keyboard it's centre-right, next to the Enter key.

I'm here to help you.

Jeff,

You really have to stop this. Your various Photoshop procedures are steepening my learning curve!

Seriously, these are great - and I'll catch up eventually.

Thanks again.

Jeff,

thanks a lot for this tip of the week. I really admire you doing this for the community.

However, I don't know about the other European users on here but I just tried it out and since the tilde is on the same key as the + all the shortcut does is zoom in. When trying Ctrl+Alt+ the key in the upper left nothing happens. I would appreciate any help from the European guys.

Cheers,
Sebastian

Sebastian,

I guess I have a US keyboard here.

Do you need to press the Shift key for the tilde? If so, maybe you need to press Shift+Ctrl+Alt+that key? If you have enough fingers?

Thanks Jeff.

Peter

I actually have to press AltGr for the tilde. Shift+Ctrl+Alt doesn't work but thanks Peter.

Cheers,
Sebastian

Hi Jeff,

Why don't you organise a Photoshop seminar at an exhibition hall somewhere? We might all come there. Cool

Thanks for this extra tip.
