Hey,
I finally got my first photo accepted in the db! It was taken several months ago and was rejected for size. I had forgotten about it until two weeks ago, resized it, uploaded it and it was accepted. Tell me what you think:
Along with that acceptance came two rejections. One photo made it past the first screener but was rejected by the second for quality. Is it worthy of an appeal?
The other was rejected for color. Paul has helped me in the past with this issue (the above AA 737) so when I get home I'll try to rework it and post it here, but in the meantime any comments would be appreciated. To me it looks like there is a yellow color cast to the photo, is that right?

Hi Keith, congrats on getting your first photo on a.net. It gets easier from this point onwards!
The first rejection looks soft to me; most of it is a little too blurred whilst there's evidence of significant sharpening as indicated by the halo along the bottom of the fuselage. It could probably do with boosting the levels in the shadow areas (in photoshop use the Shadow/Highlight feature). Overall though I would have to say that the softness of the original image is probably too much to handle.
The second shot looks great; firstly there are some jaggies along the rear edge of the tail (unless I'm mistaking them for an actual feature of the aircraft), and overall perhaps it's slightly oversharpened in places. The main issue as you point out is that there's an overall yellow/green colour cast on the image; try altering the colour balance to counteract this, reducing greens whilst boosting reds and blues a little.
Hope that helps, congrats again on a great first shot to have accepted here; I got my first shot on in April and now I'm up to 5 shots - you'll learn fast

Hey,
Thanks for all of your comments. I've been real busy with school lately so I haven't gotten a chance to reply. I messed around with the levels on the Gulfstream, but I'm about to run out the door so I'll upload it in a few hours.

Yeah, that's a feature of the airplane. I wasn't sure at first either but after comparing it with several others in the db I realized it was part of it.
Quote: That color scheme may be gone soon with the merger too, great catch.
Yeah, I haven't seen any America West planes at DCA since I took that shot, so I'm pretty happy
Congratulations on your first shot being accepted. Small recommendation though. I would be careful with your colour correction. Your appeals might have colour cast problems, and I feel as if your first accepted shot could do with some colour correction as well.
Simple rule of thumb: make it look as if it did on the day
If you're getting your colours all wrong, look at the way the original is being captured. Right film? (if film/slide) OR right settings? (if both digital and film).
