I've had an e-mail asking permission to use some of my photos in a book. I know some of you have had yours used before as I can remember seeing posts about it.
Really I'm after advice about what the going rate should be if I gave permission and also if I did give permission would I still retain the copyright?
Hope you can help.
Cheers,
APP

Yes you still retain the copyright unless they want to pay big bucks for exclusive rights to your great visionary photo. Ask them what their photo budget usually pays...If it is for the book's cover $$$$$$$$$

PRIDE IN YOUR PHOTOS!!!!! THAT IS WHAT WE SHOULD BE THINKING when a savvy publishing representative says: "oh hi, we would like to use your photo and don't worry we will give you a full photo credit".......Once again let me say that this is BS in the highest form. And some of us who might want to show our family a book that has our photo credit in it, are fast with a yes answer to this representative. Well, he/she is making money off of you!!!

Uh, I'd like to offer a word of caution here. It's great that one can be proud of their photos and take pride in them. It's even better that there's somebody interested in using your photo. I'd caution about getting militant and/or cocky about it.

If someone contacts me regarding one of my photos, I don't do the you're-going-to-pay-dearly-fo-it-because-you'll-just-use-me-to-make-money-out attitude. The simple fact is that if somebody wants a photo of mine of a Northwest Airlines DC-10, there are literally thousands of other sources that person could turn to if I chase them away with a poor attitude. More directly put, there are tens of thousands of photographers with hundreds of thousands commercial aviation photos out there. If they don't use your photo, they'll just find somebody else.

Don't get me wrong....if the photo is very rare or will be used on a cover or center page that definately increases the value of the photo. Most photos on this site really don't qualify for this though.

I just want to caution people about demanding big bucks for your photos. It will result in the publisher being disinterested in your photos. The market is definately on the publishers side right now.

Hi APP

I have had a request also from the same source.

I am not sure if it is a publisher but be cautious.

I had the Southwest Pilot's Assoc. contact me about a pic for their monthly newsletter, I emailed a copy of the pic with my copyright for free, I figured they won't make $$$ off of a newsletter, never heard back after I emailed the pic though.

Same happened here, somebody was asking me the same question.
He is writing a book etc......does that sound familiar.
I told him when the time comes and he knows exactly what kind of pic he wants to use, we will discuss terms and conditions.

As most of you already said, be cautious!

Say, APP, Granite, and AKE0404AR, who was this individual that asked for your photos ? I normally get up 7 requests a week, and was wondering if he/she may have been one of those who requested my work.

It's a challenge, if you're looking for money, you may not even get a reply from the interested person because as Mark have told, there are thousands of photos on the market.
If you're looking to divulgue your name and your work in the aviation world, you may get your name published in a book.

It's really hard to know, it's like the lottery. I have had requests were I requested to be payed and didn't receive any more news and I have had requests were I have send the photos by postal service, free, and they were published with copyright to me.

I think with time and more experience I'll be better with this.

BTW, Granite how do you know you received a request from the same source if APP doesn't tells who's the source?

I was asked as well for photos, and I told this person that if he wants to use the photos in a non-profit newsletter, then there would be no charge. I got a reply stating it is a FOR-profit book and that he would pay for use. The person that asked me was a guy from the Netherlands named Barry Nab. I'm skeptical as this person told me he hasn't found a publisher yet, which means a) he may not be completely reliable, and b) without a publisher, this book could take at least 2 years or more to make it to book store shelves.

Well, you can add me to the list as well. I had a guy e-mail me about using photos in a book he's working on.
I just started adding photos to this site recently, but I have been getting about 3-4 e-mails daily requesting their use for varous reasons. A lot of these are from guys in places like Russia or Eastern Europe, and even South America. Most of these guys want me to send them a hard copy photograph or slide, I would'nt mind this if it were a one time deal. I just dont want to go broke sending this stuff all over the world. I want to be real nice about it as I suspect some of these are kids just wanting someting really nice to have for their collection, someting they will never see in their part of the world. I just get a little uptight when the same person e-mails everyday, especially after Ive added new photos to this site.Do any of you guys have this same problem? and how do you handle it?

Hello all!

I had the same e-mails about that book, about that newsletter and that company giving flying lessons. ALL WRITING "I am unfortunately unable to offer you compensation for your photo. If you are still willing to allow me to use your photograph, please reply to this email ASAP....." I never know what to do. If the book guy does not have a publisher well I think that solves the problem. I know I cannot ask for thousands of dollars for a photo but at least if I could get a few bucks just to pay for a development or two, that would make my day and make me very happy!

Thanks for all your help,

Henry Jr Godding

I got an e-mail from this person regarding the book. He also mentioned that he was still looking for a publisher and he would get back to me when he is ready.

Thomas,

Barry Nab was the person who asked me and I told him when the time is ready he should approach me again.
I was a little odd, as he did not really say what photo he wanted to use.
If you are about to publish a book shouldn't you already have a concept and exactly know what you are looking for,hmmmmmmm...................

p.s. here is the e-mail I got ....

Hi from Holland,

I'm (I think just like you) totally fond of aircraft and everything that has just a little to do with aviation (except for military aviation). This is why I'm writing my own book about all aircraft that can be seen all over the world nowadays and the biggest airliners! For that reason, I'd like to ask you: may I use some of your photos in that book? For your information, it's called (in Dutch): Luchtvaart van A tot Z, which makes in English: Aviation from A till Z. It contains everything about civil aviation in the last decennia. Hoping to hear something (positive) from you,

Greetz,
Barry

My friend "Brick" I think (all due respect) you may have misunderstood what I was getting at. I, like many others here, give away lots of photos. I got a nice e-mail from a Delta Captain stating his best friend (also a Capt'n was retiring and he wanted a photo. Mo, problem...A Doctor that runs a web site for sick kids- also a free photo. But when I get an e-mail from a book publisher in NewYork that says a "C-Note is too much money for a "big run" book on a prominent page.....

Here is a request i got about 3 months ago for a picture of mine, needless to say I willingly gave permission...

----

""I was wondering if you would mind if I used some of your cockpit photos I pulled
off of the airliners.net webpage in a cockpit photo reference database. This
reference is to be used by researchers who design cockpits, and is not going to
be used for any type of profit or revenue gathering activities. This database is
to be freely distributed to those who qualify for access. Please let me know if
you have any problems with me utilizing your work in the database. Thanks for
your time and effort, and thanks for the great photos!

----

I said of course but requested to see, if possible, whether i could see the work.. this was the reply...:

-----

"Thank you very much Chris, I will of course keep your copyright info on
there so that you receive credit for your work. Unfortunately this is going
to be a limited access database, as it is not primarily a commercial or
private aircraft database. This is a military database to be used by Navy
and Air Force Human Factors researchers, designers, and engineers. There has
been so many requests for access to the database however, that I'm trying to
secure funding to remove sensitive material from the database for a public
version. It is an interesting database. Not web-based, but a self-executing
file with the photos encrypted inside of it. IT has a built in search
engine, and can export the photos. Neat software. I'll let you know if I
have any luck getting a public version approved. Thanks again for your
permission, and of course for your work and dedication to the aviation
community."""

-----

He seems like an honest, nice person; i recently wrote back (3 mo. later) and asked if a public version had been made, the answer was still no, but still a slim possibility...

All im curious is what should i make of all this?? im new, this was my first request of any kind (somewhat proud of it   )
Anyhew, any input would be great... Sorry this post was so very long!!!!

THANKS!

CHRIS !

There seems to be a sense here that would be authors are rapacious beasts trying to rip us off - I'm sure this happens, but I would guess most requests (at least those I've had) come from people trying to get a book published simply for the love of the subject - if (and its a big if) they find a publisher, they aren't going to get rich out of the project - specialist aviation books will normally have a very small print run, and may well have to subsidise the publication themselves.

The question is do you want to help the guy out? The author is very unlikely to be in a position to pay you, but, if he does get published you may get a credit - which might be worth more than a few bucks in the longer term. Personally I would normally allow use with a credit PLUS a copy of the book if published.

I think very few of us will be approached by the "big bucks" publishers unless we have something very unique, as these companies have vast libraries of their own and tie-ins with the major image libraries world-wide.

Cheers,

Colin
