Hello all.
I hope to be going to AMS in the not too distance furutre,
Now, I obviously won't have a car, as I'm too young to drive, and i'd rather not take a taxi, so I would like to know where the best placeses to watch and photograph planes at AMS are that I can walk to in a reasonable time ( i.e- less than 30-40mins) or that I can get to by bus without forking out a fortune.
1)I know there is a Terrace, is that a good enough place to spend 4-6 hours ?
Also, I don't mind catching a bus, but I don't know what the fares are, and how often the busses come, what stops to get off at, route numbers etc etc.
2) Is going round the AMS airport area OK for someone who can't speak or read a word of dutch ?

will answer all questions. Also the questions about bus routes, but not fares. Your best option would be to buy a "strippenkaart" at the terminal. For instance at the book shop, bus desk, or at bus driver. You'd be best of with something like 8 strips (euro 6,40) or 15 strips (euro 6,70). You can buy your fare from the bus driver, but this will be at a premium fare!
Each ride you will be deducted (stamped) one strip per zone plus one strip as boarding fee. To the Kaagbaan and Aalsmeerderbaan is 3 strips one way. To the Buitenveldertbaan is 2 or 3 I believe. Note that the strippenkaart can be used in all busses (except the long distance "Interliners"), all trams, all underground trains and most LOCAL train services.
The card is valid for until a few months after tarrif changes which happen no more then once a year. Have not got a clue when that will be though. So you should be able to use the card for future trips as well. Usually they show some leniency with foreigners and old strippenkaarten. I have seen people get accepted on board with cards that might as well be found in museums!

And easier to understand too.
You can walk from the terminal to the famous spot on the south side of runway 24 ('spottersplaats')in about an hour or so if you're really keen(!)but I would really advise taking the bus from outside the terminal.

Oh forgot to add something (just after the 30min rule damn it).
I've only got a normal camera (5 megapixel) , it's got a pretty good zoom (I can zoom 3.2 X on the camera, then another 5.0X once the shot's on the screen, but i'm not sure of the range), but it's not a DSLR
Could anyone sujest where the best spots are to get a good-OK picture with a normal camera ?

I guess your camera has a 5x Digital Zoom. IMO, you should always have it turned off, because it only decreases the image quality. I'd only use the 3.2x zoom.

What camera do you have, how much zoom do you have in mm? Saying you got 3.2X zoom frankly means nothing. It could mean 10-32mm, or 100-320mm or.... you get the idea.
Best runway is always the Kaagbaan and the Polderbaan. Since the Polderbaan is inaccesible for you unless you find someone with a car, going to the Kaagbaan will be best.
I have a Sony Cybershot DSC-S80.
I'm not sure of the range, but I can take reasonable picture of a 747 from the ground, which is about 500ft in the air

Ok, i'll spend my time between the observation area (have lunch there) and then move down Kaagbaan, might give the bus drivers a good laugh with my pronunciation of some dutch words
