For any of you who want a good spotting area at Washington Dulles (IAD) go to the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum just south of the airport. The road to the parking lot runs perpendicular to the runway, forgot which number, and you can get a good view of landing planes If you are visiting the museum, it's great, the lot is $12. In the lot, you can get even better pictures. I sat in my car waiting for planes and in 5 minutes, I got a great shot of a UA 767 in new colors, and an Alitalia 777. The museum is a Smithsonian so its free.

Hey Ashwin, it's a well known place! The runway is 1R/19L.

BTW, for those interested, here is a new bus service connecting the airport to the museum:

Hey,

If you see, probably about 80% of the shots are taken from this spot. I personally don't like it and it gets boring if you spot there alot. But it's a great place to hangout. I think the parking garage is better, but still, it's now hard to spot at IAD for free.

Hey Sunil,

Is the bus from IAD to the museum free or do they charge $12?

Kevin

I assume if you are a pedistrian, then access to the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum is free? The $12 is for parking a vehicle in their lot...

I don't remember the charges, but we're taking a couple of bucks at most, not $12.

Cost of the bus service from IAD to Udvar Hazy Museum and back is a mere
50 cents each way, a bargain.

I got chased from this spot by police. There are no parking signs along the side of the road. The parking lot is good too, but for side-on shots only.

Sounds like you parked there... park in the lot and walk back. At most you'll be asked for ID.
