F-14 Tomcats At The 2006 Oceana Airshow!? Part3

As I could see there are no further updates on the F-14 display at Oceana on the airshow site; however the date of the show is approaching quickly now and it would be time to plan the trip.
As I never was to the US before I'm seeking some advice from you guys as to how best plan this short trip and what I'll have to pay attention to.
Short overview as to how I planned it:
-Arrival from Vienna on Friday 8th to Washington
-Hire a car and drive over to Oceana (will my European driving licence be accepted?)
-Have a look at the twilight show
-Find an overnight stay (maybe the car will do  Wink)
-Watch the whole show on Saturday
-drive back to Washington somewhere after the show
and fly back to Vienna on Sunday

Any hints, explanations and advices are welcome!

Cheers,

Thierry

Ralph Duenas and myself will be arriving hopefully Friday morning. (Work schedule for the day prior permitting.) If not, we will be there Friday afternoon/evening and not in enough time to make Friday's twilight show. It will be our first time to the show so we don't really know what to expect as far as where to go! Big grin Isn't it more fun that way?

Thierry,

Sounds like a fun trip. All I can say is get to the show early. Traffic will be brutal. I went in 1999 when there were a bunch of Tomcats. Now there are only a handful and this is their last show with the NAVY
(Hopefully NASA follows through and picks up a few  Wink ) I am sure this years show will have larger crowds than in past years.

Due to other commitments I will not be attending. Get some good shots!

Chad

It's fun but not if you have to travel around half the globe and spend some hundred bucks to do it  Wink

So it's confirmed that they will arrive?  Confused Because they are about they only reason for me to go there this year; would be a huge disappointment if they didn't show up.

As long as your License can be read in English it should be ok. There are plenty of hotels near Oceana, although the price will be quite high as Oceana is in the VA Beach area, and it is prime time this time of the year. There are cheaper hotels but they might not be as close as you would like.

F-14's have been based at Oceana since 1996.

I know the feeling. I flew out of Norfolk on a Thusday and got into San Diego in the late afternoon, got home, took my family out to dinner went to bed, got 3 hours sleep, drove 5 hours to Nellis for a photo op only to find out about 45 minutes before I arrived that an F-15 crashed over the desert. Cancelled everything. It could have been huge but it wound up being wayyyy at th other end of the spectrum. You cant predict anything.

That I know (although I thought they had been withdrawn last year!?) but are they gonna participate in the flying display this year?
Thanks for keeping us up-to-date Chad as it's not easy to find some good info on the matter.  Smile

When they are not working up for a deployment or on deployment, they are on land, at Oceana. VF-31 is still around and they will be the participating squadron. Hopefully they paint the aircraft remaining with some nice hi-vis schemes. You can expect to see some fly-bys.

I'm a local, so I'll be there. For those who have a govt. ID card, you can get great rates at the Navy Lodge on base. It's $15-25 a night, but it's a first come first serve basis, so it'll be really tight with family coming and those who want to beat the traffic for that weekend.

Been through your shoes many times, Chad. I've been doing weekend flights to SAN since last year 1-2 times a month and flying back home on a sunday night redeye flight from SAN to ATL and connect to ORF and only getting 1-2 hours of sleep in flight (can't sleep on planes) and walking out of the ORF terminal and head straight to work an hour later working for 10 straight hours and getting home at 1:00am. Yup, it's worth it! It's just too bad that San Diego hasn't seen an F-14 since 2004 after our deployment.

Cheers!

Kevin

They were there a lot earlier than that or else I was seeing things....

I went through F-14 FRAMP in '86 and that was the only fighter the Navy owned other then my squadron of Phantoms which was the last Navy squadron to fly them.

You are right Jeff, I was talking about Oceana being the only base with F-14's from 1996 on. I should have been more clear. My apologies for any confusion.

Gates open at 0800; is it good enough if I go there for 0700 if I have an hotel near the base? Could you define brutal please!? 1, 2, 3, 4, ... hours jam?  Confused

And did someone already try the "Executive Squadron Chalet" tickets; are they worth purchasing; how's the view onto the flightline from there and/or how is it from the other "free" areas?

And Chad: if none are on the show in Oceana you owe me a trip on one of those aircraft carriers  Wink

Haha! Unless if Chad is the commanding officer of the Nimitz, he can, otherwise, he can't unless if he does his 3rd deployment and invites you for the tiger cruise, but you won't see any F-14 Tomcats on a carrier anymore that is being deployed.

Really? Thanks Kevin, I appreciate the help.

Honestly, his biggest obstacle with coming onboard with me is the list of my invitees is to long already... and well, maybe the fact that Monday is the last time I step foot on a carrier for several years might play into it as well.

Representing D.C, am I correct? Whitebird was here recently, last month. But then again, he did mention me how's spotting at ORF. Maybe that's my queue to know that he's coming for the show and he'll know that I'll give him a whole tour of the base/flightline and such.
