"Greetings to all the fans of “The Big Fighter”,
Well, it’s official. We conducted a brief with the Commander, Naval Air Forces U.S. Atlantic Fleet and he has approved our entire fleet flying program, including the Tomcat!
The F-14 will participate in the following events at the 2006 Oceana Air Show:
- U.S. Navy Fleet Flyby: Four Tomcats with four Hornets and four Super Hornets (Friday, Saturday and Sunday).
- U.S. Navy Air Power Demonstration: Four Tomcats performing the division level lay-down maneuver (Friday, Saturday and Sunday).
- Night Afterburner flyby at the 31st Street park to kick off the Neptune Festival Beach Blast (Saturday evening; event starts at 6:00pm; flyby scheduled for 7:30pm)
Thanks to everyone for your continued support and well wishes regarding this fabled Fighter. The 2006 Oceana Air Show will be a fitting finale for this historic aircraft and an excellent tribute to the men and women that flew and maintained her for so long.
Regards,
CDR Rich "Corky" Erie
NAS Oceana Air Show Director"
Chad: looks like you won't have to take me to the carrier just yet
You bet; I'm really looking forward to it. If only there weren't the tedious departures to and from the U.S. airports
But I guess that's only gonna be a small pain compared to a very enjoyable 1,5 days' airshow.
I hope 2GB of memory cards are gonna be enough!?

Quoting Tonyosborne (Reply 6): This promises to be a cracker of a show, really looking forward to it here...
Hey Tony!
Should you see someone with a black backpack with a Tyrolean crew label (my name is on it too) attached on top of it, give him a tap on the shoulder; it's most probably me
I'll probably spend most part of the show in the executive chalet.

They will allow a backpack then? I read on the site they were prohibited. I want to carry in my Cyberpack 6 with all my gear in it. Look for that with a United bagtag attached to the top.

You're right; I just re-read the security info and apparently backpacks are indeed prohibited. I guess that justifies the Executive chalet even more since I won't have to carry food and water along with me.
I'll travel light than with only my camera, my Sigma telezoom and the Nikon small lens. I'll nevertheless be easily recognizable as I'm the one with the thickest layer of sun cream around

That really sucks as I wanted to tug my laptop along with it incase I fill 3 and a half gb of cards! That and incase it should rain, but we should be safe there are Jason Whitebird won't be there!
Whitebird gave me a buzzed last night and he wanted to know some good spots to shoot at Norfolk so I told him to come on the airshow weekend. Oh wait, the 2 week forecast for the weekend, well, looks like rain, rain, and more rain.
Perhaps I'll see some of you guys at the Sept 22 Tomcat event. Cheers!

Quoting Singel09 (Reply 14): I am at Miramar this year. any chance of seeing a Tomcat there?
No, you will not. Sorry. After Sept. 22, the only tomcats you'll be seeing is either the desert or at museums.
I've been to Miramar numerous times, you may see a static display of a tomcat in the air musuem that they have just becuase topgun used to be based there.
Thierry, tripods shouldnt be a threat. The master-at-arms and the voluntold aux. sercurity force (thank god I never got to do that work cause it sucks, if you see them on the flightline, just laugh at them, haha.) will probably inspect it. Last years airshow, I saw tons of people using tripods becuase of the mile long lenses they had. Sheesh!

Dammit, last year was supposed to be the last!! I can't make it out there this year!
Oh well, I still have all the pictures, video and memories of last year. At least I saw the last F-14 Tac Demo (ok, second to last since I went on Saturday)... I'm grateful for that opportunity as it was the first time, of all the airshows I had attended, that I actually saw one fly in person.
