Hi Guys,

Currently using PS CS but the whole thing has crashed and I don't have the CD anymore.

So time to replace...but CS2 is just too pricey for me.

Any recommendations on good photo editing software that I could use.....how is the Nikon stuff. Obviously I need it to convert NEF files.

Thanks in advance to all

Andrew

I've been told that NX is great. I've downloaded the 30 day trial version and it's definitely interesting, need more time with it to figure out if it's right for me. it might be worth a try.

I use Corel Paint Shop Pro X since I use the Nikon D200; very good results. Compared to the Photoshop 7.0 I used before I don't see in what regards Paint Shop Pro should be less performant but it clearly only costs 1/10th of CS2.
I do the NEF conversion to TIFF in Nikon View and then edit the tiff file in PSP.

NX is definitely worth a look Andy.

A different way of working to PS, but has some great controls especially if your working in NEF. Seems to have a better NEF converter than PS. The only down side is no cloning/healing tool for Dust Spot removal.

Also have you looked at PS Essentials 4. Cut down version of PS. I use the above two together and it seems to work okay.

NX is a resource hog. Running it on a 2.6 gig P4 with 2 gigs of ram and it is slower than anything I have ever experienced.

Hi all, I'm afraid I'm on the lookout for some help too...

For the last year I've been reading and editing my D70's NEFs in Paint Shop Pro 9, but as things stand, I'm not aware that it will be able to read the updated NEF format that the D80 will use - I'm due to receive one of these over the next few weeks.

It's a real shame as PSP 9 is great, especially as it allows you to read and then edit a NEF in the same bit of kit, without having having to save it to a TIFF and then edit it elsewhere. It also allows you to open the NEF 'as shot', without forcing any alterations (white balance, exposure, sharpness etc.) upon you, and, generally speaking, I've been really pleased with the results.

So, I've been experimenting with several different RAW converters over the last few days, and Andy, I've definately found Nikon Capture NX to be one of the frontrunners. That said, it is incredibly slow and drains every last bit of juice from your machine!

What I'm after is something similar to what I've been used to in PSP 9, whereby you can open the NEF 'as shot'. In looking around I haven't found many converters that let you do this. Even if they say they do, the image that is displayed on the screen doesn't look anything like how it should. In particular, I haven't found one (including Nikon Capture NX) that doesn't insist on giving my images an orange cast, which no matter how much I adjust then try to adjust White Balance and Colour Levels back, I can't get rid of.

In fact, Thierry, I'd be interested to know how you go about using Corel Paint Shop Pro X with your D200. I just downloaded the trial copy and I was very dissapointed with the way it handled my D70 NEFs. It too gives them an orange cast, and it's RAW converter interface seems fairly complicated to use. For example, where's the adjust Exposure option gone?

To summarise, apart from in my good old PSP9, I'm struggling to get my D70 NEFs to look anywhere near life-like at all in other software packages. A bit worrying, as I think PSP9s RAW converter facilty is going to be made redundant when the D80 arrives.

Does anyone have any thoughts or tips? I'd be particularly interested to hear from any other D70 + Paint Shop Pro users, plus anyone who's got their hands on a D80 already.

Many thanks in advance,
Adam

PSPX doesn't support (yet) the D200 NEF files. However I don't see any trouble with that as I follow the same procedure with D200/PSPX that I followed with my older D100/PS7, menaing that I convert the RAW file with Nikon View and save it in TIFF format (high quality file) to edit it with PSPX afterwards.
This way I get a top quality TIFF file to edit in PSPX for any needs that come along and I save many, many bucks as Nikon View is free and PSPX only costs about 150Euro.
To be honest with you I don't understand why people would spend 900+Euro on a CS2 when they use only 1/10th of the program's potential. If you need a program to edit your shots for A.net and the like you're way better of with PSPX. Quality and userfriendliness are equal to CS2.

I use Pixmantec Rawshooter Essentials to convert D70 RAW files then edit in PSPX.

I find the quality of Rawshooter good if not brilliant. I tried the trial of Capture One but the price put me off, especially when Rawshooter Essentials was free!

I'll be honest and say I haven't used Nikon view to extract the RAW files.

Adobe is running a deal where registered PS Elements users can upgrade to CS2 for $299. I'll be making that purchase later today.

Well, having just spent the better part of two days looking around, downloading all sorts of software, the conclusion is that nothing beats CS, I just can't get the same results from any other software. I even have PS7 but that doesn't give the same output.

I'm currently downloading the test version of PS Essentials.....if that doesn't work the credit card is about to take a big big hit

Andrew

About camera raw image files
A camera raw file contains unprocessed picture data from a camera's image sensor. Think of camera raw files as your photo negative. Many digital cameras can save raw format files. You can open a raw file in Photoshop Elements, process it, and save it---rather than relying on the camera to process the file. Working with camera raw files lets you set the proper white balance, tonal range, contrast, color saturation, and sharpening.
You can reprocess the file repeatedly to achieve the results you want. Photoshop Elements doesn't save your changes to the original raw file, but it saves the last setting you used to process it.
After processing the raw image file with the Camera Raw dialog box, you open the image in Photoshop Elements, where you can work with it in the same way that you work with any photo. Then, you can save the file in any format supported by Photoshop Elements. You should usually use PSD.
To use raw files, you need to set your camera to save files in its own raw file format. When you download the files from the camera, they have file extensions like NEF or CRW. Photoshop Elements can open raw files only from supported cameras. Visit the Adobe website to view a list of supported cameras.

How about Nikon Capture 4?
I have heard that too was a great photo editing program to use and supports all the RAW types of files since it is obviously made from Nikon.

Oh and what does CS stand for?
I know the familiar ones being mentioned like Paint Shop and Photoshop/Elements but not this one. I also may be looking around for a new program to replace my Photoshop 6 which I currently use.

Hi Chris,

I wish......but just because Singapore is in Asia, doesn't mean that you can get things off the street Big grin

Anyway, sometimes it is better to simply pay for quality. Gives one peace of mind.
