Quoting Psych (Reply 2): Is that the pilot flaring or is he trying very hard to gain height and clear the fence?
If you try to gain height you do NOT raise the nose of your plane at this stage of the flight since this would only make you loose speed, the plane would stall and drop on the ground like a stone.
Flaring on the other hand should take place over the runway and NOT over the beach...

Thierry - maybe I should have put a smilie at the end of my statement - my question was not serious. Would your professional 'diagnosis' be that the pilot has simply misjudged the landing? His wheels must be dreadfully close to the top of the fence in another 10 metres or so.

Well, it's always difficult to judge without actually seeing the whole approach but since I know this place I can tell you that they are well below the glidepath and with SXM having a displaced threshold there's absolutely no reason to do so with a small plane like this Falcon.
And that's as much as I'm gonna say about it...

I must admit the person sitting on the beach towel must have had one hell of an experience - but at the same time the last few seconds of the approach over the beach must have been quite scary (for those on board too!)!

Sorry, I thought you might want to know.
It sure is VERY low.
A Falcon 20 stands 5.32m (17ft 6in) tall on the ground.
There's considerably less than that under the a/c where the guy is sitting.

He wouldn't be the first pilot to increase AOA if he feels a sink coming on - that's how some of the A321 tailstrikes have happened on landing - it's a completely natural thing to want to do in the face of the ground suddenly getting rather close - as a student pilot you'll have plenty of times where you'll do exactly that!

Having been stood exactly in the same spot as the photographer all I can do is shake my head.
It's all very well having great shots of big jets at Maho but there is NO need for this size of aircraft to be SO low over the beach. The person at the controls is either incompetent or irresponsible.
Still, it's a great shot despite of (and because of) the clown in the cockpit.

A thread on the forum at flightlevel350 questions wether or not this is genuine. Someting about the shape and form of the shadows in relation to the height of the aircraft.

Do you want to start another thread about a pilot not knowing how to fly a plane right from Flight Simulator controls? I doubt he would fly a plane when he don't know how to do that. We all have done slightly mistakes were it was very close to an accident when driving a car.

First of all: Congratulations to Robin for that pic. Well done, mate! I'll buy you a Big Tasty next time if you give me that file to make a poster out of it )
This Falcon seems to be a frequent "low-lander" at SXM according to pictures on other sites....
To the ****** at flightlevel350.com: I have never been on that site before, but it took me less than a minute to find this movie on their very own site:

I also congratulate Robin on the photo, definitely opened my eyes!
What I do find possibly disturbing is a trend here at SXM. A "How low can you Go" trend, mainly with the corporate and freight dawgs who may be trying to one-up their mates out there as they know there's likely a photographer there to capture their "incredibly low" approach to SXM. Just a thought to throw out there...

29 Bizjetslover: The Falcon is a regular visitor at SXM, there are pics of it on other sites at various dates. I've never said that the video showed the actual landing
30 Aero145: On this site too, just saw that. I know you didn't, but I was just double-checking. Got ya!
