Hi,
I want to start aviation photography and was wondering if this set up sounds any good? I have read post about this and how an expensive lense is very important but my budget is limited. I just want to know if this will take good photos (good enough to get in the database here) and if its ok for a beginner, I am not a photography beginner just aviation photography beginner.
Canon 400D
Tamron 70-300mm F/4-5.6 LD Macro
could get Sigma 70-300 for same price but as the Tamron is noramlly £200 and the shop is doing a deal to get the Tamron for £100 I guess its better to go with that?

Not sure how much difference there would be between the Tamron 70-300mm for a Canon or Nikon camera, but my 70-300mm for my Nikon D70 has served me well over the past 2 yrs. As my main lens for telephoto shots, it works well even after 13,000+ photos.

May I recommend the Canon EF75-300 USM III instead of the Tamron. A friend of mine owned the Tamron and swapped it for the Canon because the former was too soft.

While spotting at a local airport a month ago, a pilot came up to me and offered to allow me take shots of his Citation jet. Unfortunately I had only a 70 - 300mm lens on me and missed a wonderful opportunity to take cockpit and cabin shots.

Should have said that I already have an 18-55mm from my previous canon.
I actually bought the camera and lense (Tamron) today and its charging as I write this. Might go to EMA tonight or tomorrow and try it out.
Bought it from Jessops as they now do price match even on stuff of the internet, and they were very friendly and helpful.

On another note, you'll need something better than the 18-55 kit lens, which is about as much use as a chocolate kettle! The gap between where the kit lens finishes (55mm) and where the Tamron starts (70mm) is extremely significant, and without a replacement for the 18-55 you'll struggle sometimes. In addition, the 18-55 is not renowned for its image quality.
Try the Canon EF28-105mm F3.5-4.5 USM II, a great full-glass lens available for around £190.

Me too, my comment was more a parody than a serious note. I would, however, recommend people buy body only and spend the cash saved on a better lens - unless you purchased second hand and it happened to come with the 18-55.
On another note, spent the day at EMA today (Sat, 10:00-14:30), came away very happy. Kalitta didn't turn up but a nice colourful Hungarian An-26 did.....!
Also, a BA EMB-145 (with 'Connect' titles) did a few circuits early afternoon - better get 'em quick before they get swallowed by FlyBe.

I see what you mean now. My was second hand and the 18-55mm came with it.

Some decent weather today, good to hear you came away pleased! When I go over at weekends its early afternoon or something along those lines. I had a bad experiance one Saturday morning last year about 10AM and saw about 3 planes in about 1 and a half hours, so i've avioded that time ever since!

I also had bad experiences at EMA this time last year, however things have picked up of late, especially with all the new RYR destinations.
I'm a pretty patient person so I don't mind sitting there for hours on end waiting. Besides, it get's me away from the missus! Sometimes my wait is in vain, but part of the thrill at that place is never really knowing what's gonna turn up.....
