Hi everyone, I have just received the following e-mail:
Quote: Hello Nicolas. I am helping Editor Jay Selman of Airliners Magazine with the photos and also for the Airliners gallery blog. We are possibly interested in using your shot of the PLUNA 737-300 in the revised new colors. If selected Airliners Publications will send you $10 USD (via Paypal) + a copy of the magazine. If you can help please send me a high res scan (300 dpi that is at least 7.5 inches or 19 cm wide). Thank you in advance.
What should I do? I was thinking of asking where will the photo be in the magazine, in which size and how many prints will be made... Am I on the right track?
Thanks in advance guys!

Wherever the photo is in the magazine, it is worth more than $10.

I would do it. It gets your name/photo in a fairly popular magazine, many will say that $10 is enough but me personally, I take airplane pictures because I like airplanes, not because I want to make money.

I'm in a deal where $300 CDN is the subject. I'm not mentioning which airline, but the deal is genuine. Get the best dollar for your photo. The extras are secondary. They come naturally, as a perk for the deals.

You compare apples with oranges. Magazines usually pay standard rates, and you hopefully realize they're far below 300 Dollars.
Nicolas, it's very unlikely they would pay you more. Either accept and get USD10 plus a mag with your photo in it or decline and get nothing. You choice.

As many other ssaid, get the 10USD and the mag for free. You can get more when selling to companies/airlines, but that's a differenet thing. I got one sold to an advertising agency for 225 Euro while two to Aero International Magazine for 28 Euro.

DO do it for $10. You put your pictures on display here on A.net (for like-minded enthusiasts across the world to see) for free, so what's the difference in doing so in magazine format?
It ain't gonna be used for commercial purposes (well, not in the real sense of the word anyway), so $10 is not to be scoffed at. Besides, lots of people from across the globe will see your work.
If you're in this game for the money only, don't let it go for that amount. If, however, you truly have a love for aviation then sell it and put your name about in respectable publications such as Airliners.

Airliners is a magazine for enthusiasts that pays standard rates for pictures in their news section. It is up to you if you accept their offer, but they will use another photo if you don't. And IMO the compensation they offer is fair enough.

He is not doing you a favor by selecting your photo, giving you a VERY small $10.00 and then trying to satisfy you by dangling the magazine at you....He and all other editors know that AT LEAST $75.00 AT LEAST... is the going mag rate...

Mark, as much as I admire you and your work, I just don't know if this is still true. The simple fact that if he says no, the editor can find some other person for $10 means that the rate isn't $75 anymore. DSLRs have changed everything, especially considering that the OP's photo, while good, is not particularly remarkable. (As in, no flames shooting out of engines, etc.)

DLX...
Thanks..
You know, you are correct... I agree....but I think it should at least be $25.00 or $50.00..
They probably have a small budget...

Also, I think we should all try to avoid copying and pasting a personal e-mail..
I mean, this man e-mailed a request to Nicolas and now the e-mail is public..
Not cool.

INNflight, I didn't say it was a magazine...so, here I'm saying it's not a magazine, and I'm not mentioning what it's uses are. Lets just say it "could" be sized 12'X18'.....
Deals being finalized this week.

Fightingdingo is correct with this, I've had a few in magazines before and there worth 4X this.
