A quick question to all the Sydney spotters..........
When going out to Mascot: do you wing it and just grab whatever's coming and going ie you work around the time of day or are you going out to shoot specific aircraft regardless of lighting and the work on it in post processing?
Reason I ask is that I desperately want to catch a South African Airways ac but their arrival and departure times are always "bad time of day to shoot". There is one coming in today at 3:26pm so I'll be out trying to grab it. Last time I tried the flight was delayed for hours
what do you guys do?
I usually check in at ozradar (to see direction of take offs/landings), airport message board (for any news) all sorts of info out there....guess I'm just a newbie struggling to put it all together.

Brett, after a while you get a feel for what is coming and going at different times of the day, and the best times of day, hence you will see folk on the Eastern side of runways in the morning, ie the tower mound or around on Qantas Dve at the approaches to 16R, In the afternoon when lots of the heavies depart you will find some of those same folk around at the Beach Carpark near the old ATC tower.
The SAA SA7700 flight today (Saturday) Due 14:35 current ETA 15:40 should be easy to recognise, it is a big white jumbo with a strange animal on the red tail!.. Oh no that would be QF 64 from JNB. Sadly the quick glance at Sydney arrivals that shows many varied and exotic airlines is a tad misleading, many of those are codeshares with QF/SQ/BA etc.
YSSY message board is good for news, Ozradar is a great thing and I admire Balt and his efforts in implementing and maintaining the site but it is limited by two things, not enough A/C currently have ADS/B implemented and unless you are very close to the airport you may not get enough warning.
Quoting Brett (Thread starter): specific aircraft regardless of lighting and the work on it in post processing?
Sometimes yes, if there is something rare or unusual ie GulfAir during the day or an unusual visitor, you just gotta take what you can get.. sometimes it works sometmes it doesn't.
On the 747SP question, you may have to travel to see one, and don't leave it that long, one in Canberra , I doubt it, not sure there is a hangar there that could conceal a 747SP, be one of aviation' better kept secret if it was.
Cheers and keep at it,
Chris

Of course old planes are safe, how do you think they got to be old?

Hey Chris, thanks for the informative reply.
Quoting StealthZ (Reply 2): many of those are codeshares with QF/SQ/BA etc.
...what does that mean? That it's a SAA flight using a QANTAS ac?

Brett,
South african airways dont fly to Sydney anymore they codeshare with Qantas flights, thats what Chris was elaborating on,KLM,Finnair,Lufthansa all are codeshares with other airlines and dont send their AC to Sydney.

Quoting Brett (Reply 4): How did you figure this out?
Hey Brett,
Not being patronising at all because a couple of years ago this all seemed like some kind of magic to me as well.
By watching sites like the Sydney Airport arrivals site, the YSSY Message board etc you get a feel for what is going on.... generally if there is a flight from an airline not normally seen at YSSY that arrives/departs the same time as a QF/SQ/MH/BA etc then it will be a code share.
Cheers
Chris
