Hello All,

I'm trying to buy my wife a camera for Christmas and have come across this deal for a Canon Rebel Xti. For $1,099 with $200 in rebates it comes with the camera body and a 18-55mm lens and a 75-300mm lens for a final total of $899. Here's the link. Please tell me if you think this one is a good idea.

Buy it. If she doesn't like it, Wolf will take it back in 30 days If I'm not mistaken.

The big question is, what does she like to take pictures of, and how serious is she? The lenses you selected are not the greatest, and will give mostly adequate results, but nothing spectacular.

You might be better off with a better lens and some lighting.

What does your wife need it for? That's important. For just shooting friends this gear is a bit expensive and big. If she has bit more ambitions in photography the gear is good.

She would like to get into photography more. Her big concern is fast shutter speed so she'll be able to snap quick pics of the rugrat once he arrives in another couple of months. But as I said she does want to do more with photography so a good SLR is in the mix somewhere for us.

Her friend has the older digital Rebel and it seems like a pretty good camera.

Will someone like me or her even be able to tell at this point that the lenses are adequate and not spectacular?

Nope, for the beginning these lenses are OK. Nothing to worry about.
