I've buy the Canon EOS 30 for a few days. I'm still discovering the functions but there is one thing I would like to know from other photographers using this camera.
When I'm on the Basic Zone using the Sports Mode, all the focusing points are selected. Can't I select just one focusing point (centre) while I'm on Sports Mode? I know how to do this on the Creative Zone but not on the Basic Zone.
I would like to use always the Sport Mode because it keeps very high shutter speeds while on the Creative Zone I must work "harder" to keep a good speed, specially at sunset.

On the basic zone of EOS 30 you can't take influence on the different parameters, such as AF-point. That's why I never go on Basic Zone.

All the focus points light up simply because they all pick out the subject - which means they all can focus on the subject at hand. I personally use Tv mode for most of my shots using my Elan 7E (EOS 30??) that way giving me an option to manipulate the shutter speed depending on the subject and the lens. Most of my pics are taken using a 200mm Æ’2.8 but I set the shutter speed to as low as 1/125 (handheld) without many problems (steady hands?). In strange lighting conditions I just use the manual mode to control shutter and aperture.

I have a lot to practice with this camera. At the end of the day, when the sun is very low and the aperture starts blinking, that's when I have doubts. I know I was spoiled by the auto mode in the last 6 years but now it's another story.
Maybe it's a good idea when the aperture is not enough and the speed is dangerously low to the image stabilier.

Whenever possible I go on AV mode and set f 8 or 9.5. However, I try to never use lower speed than 1/250. When light conditions aren't good enough, then I go to TV mode and set 1/250 or faster.
Another tip:
For moving aircaft, for example aircraft on approach from my right side, I set the AF-point to the most left point. That way, the nose of the aircraft is on focus.
Some questions:
1) What metering system do you use? I mostly use centre-weighted averaging metering.
2) Do you use exposure shift? For prints I usually shift 0.5 stops to "overexpose". For slides not always.

I use the evaluative metering, from what I've read it divides the viewfinder into 35 metering zones linked to the seven focusing points. The camera reads several items and other light conditions to set a suitable exposure for the subject (Instructions page 56).
As for exposure, during normal light conditions I don't use any exposure shift. So far the negatives are well exposed, about the prints is another story, the guys at the lab do what they think it's better, but not the real thing.
Do you use any protection filter? I've a skylight wich I was thinking was absolutelly neutral but I read it is a pale pink filter.

What make of filter (Sky) do you use? I have a HOYA multicoat on my 200mm Æ’2.8 lens and have absolutely no trouble with any hue... It serves well as a protection filter as well.
