I am a total photography novice and I'm just curious if someone can descibe this to me in the most basic broken down form. This is regarding the camera I just bought, why would a 10.1 Megapixel digital camera have almost 10.4 million total pixels and only have 10.1 million useable or effective pixels?
• 10.37 million pixels total
• 10.10 million effective pixels

The total pixel count is what is generated on the sensor, but not are not made up as part of the image. Effective pixels are the actual pixel count used to create an image, basically you don't have the "image" going to the edge of the sensor.
