I am interested in purchasing a new lens for my 10D (and soon to be purchased 30D) and would like to get some input as to which lens to get.
Currently I have a basic Sigma 18-55 which I will keep and use the 18-25 portion, probably for airshows etc, a Canon 75-300IS USM and the Canon 100-400IS which is great.
What lens can you you guys recommend for wide angle use, it can start in the mid twenties range as I said I will keep my other for those ultra close ups?

So, if I read correct, you are looking for a new lens, covering the 25-75 range ? Which makes it a standard zoom, not a wide lens... anyway:
- Canon 24-70 / F2.8 L (superb lens, although heavy and expensive)
- Canon 28-105 / F3.5-4.5 (probably occasion-only; no L quality, but still highly ranked)
- Tamron SP 24-135 / F3.5-5.6 (sharp, affordable, but slow AF in low light)
The last one was my choice two years ago, and I am still quite satisfied with it. A great walk-around lens with my 10D... it has good contrast (just a bit soft wide open); natural colours and it generally delivers sharp pictures.
However, I also have a nice Sigma 12-24 / F4.5-5.6 EX, which is my real wide lens... you might consider that range, too !

I think what's in the mid-twenties from Canon is the EF24-105mm f/4L IS
USM...
Nothing else comes up in my mind except the EF28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM, which is the lens that many current 24-105L IS owners had... But it's not as good of course....
Just my
EDIT: Klaas beat me to it... guess his post is more valuable than mine!

I excluded the Canon 24-105 / F4 L IS because of several (initial ?) problems reported with it; I more then once considered buying one of these, but still don't dare...

...and I didn't dare to say it had problems as I used a 24-105L IS and wasn't happy (it was soft!), but I thought it was an incommon problem, but then I read more, and saw it wasn't that incommon.

Hey Stuart, Klaas is a more respectable guy than me, especially when talking about lenses, so I'd listen to him.

Hello again!
I have just been taking a look a something a little different. Can anyone tell me if this lens in any good - Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM - also, which is better, the 28-200 or the 28-105. As I am going to purchase my second body (there must be a joke in there somewhere) a Canon 30D I cannot afford to spend $1,000 or so on a lens as well, especially as I will be flying from Europe to the US to purchase the camera body. The above two lenses sound quite good, and are a lot cheaper. Any thoughts most appreciated.

Wouldn't do that Especially not for a 30D, unless you really need it... My advice: just relax and wait ca. 3 months for its successor, 40D or whatever it will be called. Should have 10MP at least + other new features.

The 28-105 F3.5-4.5 II USM is far better... but be aware not to buy a 28-105 F4-5.6 USM, which is even worse than the 28-200 ! Finally, there's the 24-85 F3.5-4.5 USM, which quality is in between (not very good, though).
All of these lenses are available below $450, but of course, none of them is L-quality !

Do you know for sure when the next one will be launced? I am interested to know this of course. Many people I have spoken for believe there will be an update for the 1D/5D first, plus when the 40D (assuming it is called that) is launched it will be more expensive of course. I just don't want to wait, say, a year to 18 months and then not be able to afford it for another year to 18 months. I really like the 5fps and the lower ISO on the 30D and an extra body is always welcome (just don't tell my wife ).
Also, a friend of mine has the Sigma 17-35 F2.8 which he advises me is very good. I just thought I could use my Sigma 18-55 for ultra close up's, my 75-300/100-400 for longer range shots and then I could purchase somthing in between, like a 24-105 to bride the gap, so to speak. What do you think about this idea?

@ Stuart, regarding the 30D: of course, do whatever you like... but spending extra money for a ticket to the USA to buy a cheap body overthere just sounds odd to me. I would rather save the money and spend it on an even better camera. Do you really need that extra body now ?
Quoting Raptors (Reply 9): a friend of mine has the Sigma 17-35 F2.8 which he advises me is very good
Don't know whether he has the DG version or the aspherical, but both of these have some AF problems and are reported to be soft.
The Tamron 17-35 / F2.8-4.0 is far better !

Like I said before, the Canon 24-105 / F4.0 L IS has (had ?) some serious optical problems; check previous topics about it. As much as I would like to have an L-lens in that standard range, I stay away from it. The best alternative is Canon's 28-105 / F3.5-4.5 II USM; no L-quality, no IS... but why would you need IS it at that range (because the lens is too heavy ?)
Again, if you want a nice range and you don't really need big apertures, try Tamron's SP 24-135 F3.5-5.6. It has minor flaws but it satisfies me as a great walkaround lens. Both the Canon and the Tamron are older models, but still available in specialized shops.

I work for an airline (so cheap ticket, coupled with a good exchange rate USD/GBP). I am combing a trip to the States to purchase the camera and then use it along with a friend, so two birds with one stone, so to speak.
Do I need an extra body now, no, I don't NEED it, but I would l LIKE it. I believe some of the features on the 30D would be very useful for me. As for the 40D? who knows when this will appear. I am looking at keeping the 30D for quite a while then perhaps offloading my 10D to obtain a 40D/50D a few years down the line. I hope that makes sence!
You obviously know what you're talking about and I will take your advice and get the Canon's 28-105 / F3.5-4.5 II USM at the same time as I purchase the 30D.
Many thanks for your help and advice, it has been most useful. If only you could tell me when the 40D is coming out

Stuart, have fun and good luck with your 30D !
Should be a great combo with the 28-105
And no, I don't know when the 40D is coming out, but I'll wait and see...
