Hi.

Can anyone tell me what runway is in use at what time of the day at LHR this week? I want to go down and take a few pics if possible and winds and runway usage allow.

Cheers

Andy S

If the winds stay from the west, 27L will be used for landings until 3pm

Excellent! I too plan a trip down this week. Was actually gonna go today (BBC shows clear from sunrise until 16:00(ish)) but am a bit distrusting of the BBC of late, especially when I live in Stoke.

If anyone's interested in meeting up down there sometime this week give me a shout. Be a pleasure to shoot with some of ya's.

I might go down tomorrow as Friday looks like rain and very cold. BBC weather is a bit suspect I agree.

Jus checked travel costs and its so expensive from Nottingham. £47 on the train plus the £15 or so to get from St Pancras to LHR. National Express is £38 direct to LHR or £16 ish to central London plus the cost getting to LHR. Will probably just get the bus direct to LHR as I cant really be doing with messing around in London more than I have to. Its a 06:50 start though and then 3h30m on the bus each way.  Angry Us students arent used to getting up at that sort of time.  Wink.
Havnt been to LHR since August so it will be good to shoot some heavies after the usual EMA stuff.

You may need to check this but when I were a lad (I'm only 28 now!) we used to book the NatEx coach from Stoke to Central London for about £18. What they don't tell you is that the coach stops at LHR BEFORE it goes on to London, so you just hop off at The 'Row. When you need to get back on at the end of your day all you do is go up to the NatEx desk, tell 'em your flight was late and you can't make it into London on time. Ask them if you can simply pick the coach up at 'Row because it has to pass through there on its way anyway.

Good little trick, but you'd have to check whether the Nottingham coach does similarly.

Just checked that out and it appears to only stop at Marble Arch before Victoria bus station. I have been on this bus a couple of times and this is the route it has taken. Would be a good trick if it still worked.

How much difference is there in going to LHR on a Sunday as opposed to a Saturday?

I'll probably go down at the weekend - weather looks OK for Sat and good for Sun. Difference in what? Traffic, cost of travel?

Depending on how many go, if you can get yourself in a convenient pick-up place (very early) I'll collect ya and drop ya off.

I am actually going to travel down with my family but thanks very much for the lift offer. Hopefully I can still maybe meet up with some of you. How many are going down?

My question about which day is better was in relation to traffic. Im assuming that there isnt really that much difference, is that the case?

Saturday I believe is one of the best days, Sunday about average. It's the 'Row anyway, so no doubt there'll be plenty of action regardless!

Hi guys

I am on shift at the moment and the wind has changed so now we are using 09l for arrival and 09r for departure.

Hope this helps.

Stuart do you have any idea what the winds will be like tomorrow?

I doubt I'll bother going down if its the 09s in use as I dont know how to get to any of the photo spots there.

09 is pretty good for photo's - head for Stanwell Green, go through the village, onto the dual carriageway and there's a field opposite the T5 constructioin site. Long way from the terminals, though - may need a car.

I have just checked the latest TAF and tomorrow I expect they will use 09L/R and there should be a good chance of sun.
Maybe time to investigate those spotting loactions?
Who knows, I might even shoot some tomorrow as well.

Do you know of any others besides the field I mentioned opposite T5?

Not really, I guess a little drive round the area will be helpful, however, you could always try Myrtle Avenue (normally used for 27L landing shots) for those 09R heavy departures. Something to think about.

Well I dont have a car and I probably wont have the time to go exploring by the time I have got down from Nottingham so I will probably put my trip on hold until next week some time.

Have a good time if your going down this weekend.  Smile

I'm glad you all had a good time. All those pics are very nice. I especially like your shot of the VS 744 Ryan.

Are those take offs from the 09s? Where did you take those shots? I would be interested to know as I've only ever take rwy 27 landing shots before.

Also, what sort of lens for those take-off shots? I've only 200mm at the long end (+ 1.6x crop factor = 320mm). Were they shot from the Duke's Green Tesco?

Cheers,
