hello, my wife would like to use my camera to take close up pictures of flowers and similar things. We have a Canon 300D body. Not sure what would be a good macro lens to buy, wondered if you might recommend a good Canon lens suitable for this purpose. We like to stick with Canon lenses. thanks

Hi Gary,

I have a Canon Macro 100mm 1:2.8 USM that I think takes real sharp images.

Heres an example of it on a 5D body.

Cheers,

Kevin

I agree with Kevin an excellent lens, not an 'L' lens but should be.
A very sharp macro that won't cost the earth. Always in my bag!

Take care

PS: How do you find the 5D Kevin, any good??

I really love the full frame sensor. I'm very happy with it.

Cheers  Smile

I plan to add it to my bag in September or it's successor for some of my wedding jobs.

Take care

If you want to stick with Canon: Not a bad choice at all!

EF-S 60/2.8: Crop cameras only, but worth a look.
+ Internal focus. Means: Lens doesn't extend length.
+ Full time manual control (FTM). Fine tuning focus possible in AF mode. Very handy in macro world.
+ Sharp
+ Price (even better with a rebate ...)
+ USM (not as fast as some teles but faster compared to third party lenses)
- Heavy vignetting wide open when focussed to infinity.
- No focus limiter available.
- EF-S: Crop cameras only

EF 100/2.8:
+ compatible with full format cameras
+ Internal focus
+ FTM
+ Sharp
+ Focus limiter
+ USM (not as fast as some teles but faster compared to third party lenses)
- Price

The macros in the 90-105 offered by Sigma, Tamron and Tokina do have quite the same sharpness as the Canon 100 and are cheaper (a lot cheaper, in fact). They don't offer IF, do have some slower AF for example.

The macro range beyond 105 is - in my opinion - not the first choice when it comes to flowers.

Ciao, Walter
