Hi,

I will be travelling over to the US soon, my first port of call being JFK. I hope to arrive around 11.00 (although I am on standby) and then depart again on JetBlue at 19.35.
During the time in between I am thinking of going to Adorama downtown to possibly purchase a couple of lenses. At the moment I have no transport so might hire a car (so I can shoot some photos later in the day), or may get a cab. The day in question will be a Thursday and I am just wondering how long a return journey is likely to take, approximately? Is there a quicker way other than by car? Could I get a metro/train etc?
Any help would be most appreciated. Many thanks.

Regards, Stuart  Smile

In the days before the air train, I once took the subway from JFK to Manhattan. I would say that it NOT the fastest way to go. The subway through Brooklyn is a local and takes quite a while.

I've never taken the air train, but it goes from JFK to Jamaica, Queens. There, the fastest way to Manattan is by Long Island RR (one stop) or you could take the subway (several stops). Once in Manhattan (LIRR takes you to Grand Central Station) you would either need to taxi or subway to the store.

Point to point, it's probably fastest by taxi. My guess is that it would still take 45 minutes. Not sure of the cost for these options. I think that you can research this on the JFK website.

have fun
Dan

The AirTrain will take you to the Long Island Rail Road in Jamaica. From there, any westbound LIRR train will take you to Penn Station (NOT Grand Central). You can take the subway from Penn to Adorama. On Adorama's store info page,

http://www.adorama.com/catalog.tpl?o...dorama_inside&sid=1173888709196716

scroll down to "Travel Directions" and follow the "From Penn Station" instructions. The LIRR fare from Jamaica to Penn is $5 each way, off-peak. Be sure to buy your ticket at the station, there is a surcharge for buying on the train.

AirTrain info is at http://www.panynj.gov/airtrain/ They have a button marked "JFK to Penn Station ... Click Here" that will give you more details on your options.

Not during the day it isn't, the C does local while the A goes express. But yes, the A train from Hobe to the City is certainly not the fastest option. With the $5 Airtrain charge plus $2 for the A, it's not really even a cheap option either.

Thanks guy's.

What about hiring a car? Do you think this would be alright? I have been to Adorama before so know roughly where it is, and after my visit I have some freedom! I went on a Sunday last time so a week day would be differnt. How is parking in this area?

Thanks again.

Stuart

Parking won't be easy, especially if you will be there on a week day. Your best bet will probably be off-street parking (in a garage or lot). NYC Department CIty Planning has a handy web site with maps of parking facilities in the boroughs:
http://nyc.gov/html/dcp/html/parking/pidpindex.shtml

Of course, parking isn't cheap. And remember, driving in Manhattan isn't for the faint of heart  Smile

Very true! It was bad enough on a Sunday last time!!

I might look at getting a cab then from JFK, I think this might be the safest and most straight forward way to go.

Thanks for all your help.

Just be sure to note Adorama's holiday hours as I believe they'll be closing for several days/week soon.

The trip between JFK and Manhattan is a flat $45 fare (plus tolls). This applies to trips in either direction.

Thanks guy's.

I have just found out that my friend will now arrive one day earlier than me so he is going to hire a car and pick me up. We will have GPS so hopefully, hopefully all will turn out well. Thanks again for all your help and advice.
