I've been watching Hawaii 5-0 recently and have seen many shots of HNL., These were filmed in the late 60's.

I can recognize some of the scenery, but I know a lot has changed. Does anyone have any pictures of old HNL (60's 70's) they can post, or does anyone know of any sites? I've seen the ones on A-Net, but they only go back to 1999.

Thanks.

The State of Hawai‘i's Dept of Transportation website has some historic photos in an archive section.

The HNL RareBirds series on this forum has some historic photos posted.
Vol 11: http://www.airliners.net/discussions...eneral_aviation/read.main/3150576/
It contains a link to past archived volumes.

Hope this helps ...

I have probably 8-10 postcards of HNL from the 1960s and 1970s. If I have time, I can scan them in and post them.

In the interim, here's a diagram of the HNL terminal as it appeared in 1971:
http://oldterminals.topcities.com/HNLmap1971.jpg

The map shows the John Rodgers Terminal in its original 1962 configuration - the original two ticket lobbies (today's Lobbies 5 and 6) form the core of the building. Both the Ewa and Diamond Head Concourses are partially complete to handle 747s, while the old Central Concourse handles DC8s and 707s.

Under construction at this time would be the huge Ewa-side main terminal addition, which includes today's Ticket Lobby 4 and the international arrivals facility. It opened, I believe, in 1972-73, along with elevated walkways connecting the Ewa and Diamond Head Concourses to the main terminal. Between 1970 and 1973, passengers leaving from those gates had to take shuttle buses from the terminal.

Also interesting to note - baggage claim is still housed in the curved one-story building on the east side of the terminal, as are international arrivals. Arriving flights used to arrive at this building, deplane their passengers, and were then towed over to the Central Concourse before departing again. Baggage claim was moved to the lower level of the main terminal starting in 1973 with the Ewa-side terminal addition. The old curved baggage claim building remained standing until the mid-1980s, when it demolished to make room for today's Ticket Lobbies 7 and 8, which opened in 1986.

The Central Concourse was demolished and rebuilt between 1978 and 1980, making it suitable for widebody operations. At the same time, the four "frontal" gates (Gates 12-13 and Gates 24-25) were built along the front of the main terminal, and both were connected to the upper level Wiki-Wiki roadway, making them capable of handling international flights.

The HNL terminal is one of my favorites... a lot of people think it looks old and tired, but I love the "retro" feel and the open-air concourses. Watching old episodes of "Hawaii Five-O" is a great way to see what the building looked like in the 1970s, and they have awesome footage of United DC8s and 747s landing.

I love the Old Hawaii 5-0's when they had airport scenes. The old UA stars & bars 747 and stretch 8's!
