Hi everyone,

I'll be making my annual trip to the South of England next month and whilst down there, I'm thinking of having a ride out for the day from LGW to somewhere. Easyjet have really good fares at the minute on the GVA and NCE routes, and the times are very good too.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend one or the other? Obviously I wont have a car at the other end, so I need to know really which airport has the best views for photography, within reasonable walking distance of the terminal (or even at the terminal?).

Regards,

Tim.

Go for Nice if you can arrange to fly in late May, you might get quite some special bizjet visitors because of the F1 Grand Prix in Monte Carlo around the 28th I think.

Planned to go there, can't anymore...bugger  Sad

Cheers,
Florian

If I remember right the only time the sun isn't right in your face is late in the evening.

Geneva is good.

You can walk to the exec terminal and shoot through the holes in the fence of their car park which is right next to the hold.

Plenty of exec movements.

Light is good from that point aswell.

True unfortunately. I'd still pick Nice over GVA.... sea, sun and fun  Wink

Thanks for the replies so far guys.

I'm flying down to LGW on 14th, so a day trip would most likely be 15th.

I seem to think you're right Royal. I've driven past the airport before on the dual-carriageway, but never actually had the opportunity to photograph there. I was wondering if there is anywhere you can get to the south side of the approach lights?

That sounds good. Can you get all the usual movements from outside of the terminal?

Tim.

Sure! Rent a boat and you should be fine on the water on the south side of the airport!  Wink

NCE is horror in terms of light. Other traffic than bizjets is also very boring. I rented a small boat the recent year to get the sun in the back. It took roughly 25mins when we were checked by some policeboat .... , we were told to leave the spot .... - so not a good idea with the boat.
Would be different if you have a 50m+ boat ....
I am flying to NCE this evening and guess what where I am going spotting on Saturday? I ll drive down the way to MRS Smile

Having been to both, would definitely pick Geneva over Nice, although both can be pretty quiet for airliner traffic with biz making up the numbers. GVA has much better photography opportunities and more biz.

Check out www.dpts.org for lots of GVA info

Hey DC10Tim,

Never been to NCE but I would not go there for spotting, light and trafic isn't worth. If you plan to come to GVA I'll be glad to drive you around if you want. Just drop me an IM.  Smile

Cheers,
Alejandro

That's very kind of you Alejandro. I will most likely be booking GVA in the next day or so.

I'll drop you a line nearer the time.

Regards,

Tim.

Nice is the one place in Europe I've had the filth stop me taking pictures. Some Gendarme on a moped was most objectionable there and only my BA staff pass stopped him going further I think. And yes, the sun is nearly always in the wrong place unless you get to the other side of the airport.

The other problem with Nice of course, is it's where JGPH1A lives which could be disastrous! Big grin
