Hello,

I have a friend living in Beirut, and I will probably visit him for a few days in some time. I've seen beautiful pictures on the net taken in Beirut, and I'd really love to be able to spend about half a day at the airport. Does anyone have info on Beirut spotting? Advices, ideas, contacts, guides? Any restrictions?

Thanks a lot for anything you have about the place! Kind regards,

Philippe

Hi Phillipe,

I've been doing photography in and around Beirut airport for some time. Othes have done ot before me as well. It quite nice as there are some spots that you really get close to the rwys and at times get the beautiful moutainous background.

The airport security says it's not allowed but at the same time thay say that "do whatever you like as long as you're outside the airport fence. So sometimes they are tough and sometimes they just don't even bother asking anything.

I have been questioned on the spot a few times and after doing identity checks again on the spot, they said it was okay. I always tell them I'll leave if you want but they don't care about the photos and just want to make sure that they are maintaining the airport security.

I can't tell how they would react if there were a group of photographers walking around the fence. Maybe that would draw more attention. I don't know.

I think once you're here, try to go there and check some of the spots. If I can make time, I can help as well since I know all the "good" spots.

Unfortunately, after the war in July, my favorite spots are now unaccessable. Most of the debris from the destruction was desposed over those areas and now these are being processed.
You can see the debris in the background of this photo:

It's from that spot that I have taken photos like these:

This is in a nutshell  Smile Let me know if you need more.

Best regards,

Hey Vatche! Thanks a lot for your poste, very informative and interesting. I see that there seems to be not to many problems with the police there, which is a good thing.

I'd truly appreciate if you would be there when I visit, I always like to meet locals to the places I get to visit, and it wusre would be a nice opportunity. I will contact you if ever things get confirmed for a visit to Lebanon. However, I don't know for now, as it seems to get compromised.... We'll see!

Anyways, thanks again for your help, and thanks also to Tom3 and AndersNilsson for the links!
Philippe

Hi Philippe,

I'm always ready to help people with spotting here as I have done many times in the past. My only problem is work and I can not predict how busy I'll be during a certain period. Please drop me a line when you're visiting and I will let you know. I really hope that I'll be able to make time since I enjoy spotting with people a lot.

Hope to see you.
Vatche

So do I! I hope we can meet, even though travel to Beirut seems on hold for now... I'll let you know if I can make it! Thanks a lot Vatche, talk to you soon.

Philippe
