Hey!
I just started spotting Planes. I've been at Stauning, Denmark, last year and took some Pictures of the Museum's flightday. I took them with a 55-200 Lens, and it was ok.
Last Week and also today, I was at Frankfurt Airport EDDF. And the Problem is, 200 is not enough.. So I thought about buying the 100-400 IS.
Limit is 1500€.

The 100-400 is well up there with the most popular aviation photography lenses, if not the most popular. Some have a slight softness at 400mm. Mine never leaves the camera. I can only say good things about them.
But if you are just starting I would say buying a L-Lens is a bit too much if money plays a roll. Go for a cheaper lens on beginning and buy better equipment later. Wouldn't be good for you to recognise that photography isn't your "passion" with an expensive lens in the bag. What camera do you have?

Terrible advice in my opinion. Why try and handicap the guy? You can pick one up for less then $1500.

I got mine under €1,300 in Germany, and I have no softness problems at 400mm f/5.6. Even put it on a 1D Mark II N today with the 1.4x and on 560mm f/8 it was much better than one would believe!

I've got the Canon EOS 350D.. I love using it, and I've got a lot of Pics showing the Nature and Animals, or Buildings, or something else.. The Idea, spending a day at the Airport, just taking Pictures of the planes,is a new one.But it's fun.

It's not as bad as you think. Wolverine said he was a beginner, and starting out with a 'simple' 70-300 let's you learn where the limitations are, and what you actually want. An investment for the 100-400 is huge!

Thanks, you should never forget that it's just a hobby. how often are the guys here critised for buying an expensive gear shooting without any knowledge, uploading here and blaming the screeners for getting pics rejected like "My camera and lens cost 2500€ so my pics can't be bad"
How far down has Anet brought the hobby. Youngsters starting with L-Glass and others living just for the site and their uploaded pics.....SAD.
Imagine that you still can take the pics for you and not just for Anet.

There's no reason to worry, Guys! I've tried uploading 2 Pictures earlier, in last summer. They where rejected..
So, this is just the second time, I'm trying getting 2 Pics in the ANet.. If they get rejected too, I'll try again another time.
At least, I take these Pictures for me, some of them I host at Online Albums at Canon Image Gateway.
I love Photography since I was a 8th Grader at School, when we had some Lessons in Photography.
I also thought about buying the Sigma 170-500, but a lot of People told me, not to buy it.. One said, it was the worst Lens he ever had..
I really don't know...

It's not only the shipping that he should worry about, it's also customs. Sure, sending a DVD overseas is not usually a big problem. But sending a big package with an expensive price tag will most definitely attract custom's attention who can easily apply an import fee on it.

I bought my 100-400 for quite the same reason. My 70-200+1.4 didn't have the reach I wanted, so I upgraded. Even if you are a beginner, you can build up your skills using this lens probably easier than you could using cheaper gear. There's no reason to buy worse gear if you're willing to invest the money for the good stuff.
