Well I finally got the Camera that I have been watering for the past couple of months. The camera I got is the Canon 1D MarkIII. With it I also got the Canon 580EXII flash, and 2GB 300X card. I've played around with it a little bit, but right now I just need to figure out how I what each setting, there are a lot of settings to adjust, I'm use to the 300D of how simple it is. When I have time I'll post some pictures.

Congratulations with the camera!

If you haven't done it, I'd take a look what Rob Galbraith (www.robgalbraith.com) says about the focussing issues, I'd check it out and then try the focussing as he says the camera has problems with and check if the same thing happens with your body.

And of course we all hope your copy is not faulty.  Smile

Davide

Nick - congratulations on your purchase I'm sure you will be delighted with it. I got mine last week having waited since February for it.

As the guys have said it's quite a step up from the 300, and certainly not a camera you can use straight out of the box it needs configured to what you shoot.

http://www.eos-forums.com/index.php?topic=13275.0;topicseen

This link is useful as it will show you how some existing users have configured the camera - note there are are so many custom functions to understand. You'll also find several other mk111 discussions on the eos forum so I'd encourage you to have a read.

Please feel free to send me a personal e-mail if you struggle with any of the settings and I'll try to help best I can.

Good luck with it
Garry

Hi Nick,

Congratulations!. I will probably buy this toy too (I currently have a 5D), but I wait a bit that the youthful problems are solved. I also heard and read about the focus problem in pre-production bodies. I hope it's solved on the first production products.  Sad http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/4,500-ooo...i-auto+focus-under-heat-271271.php

But it's definitelly a great camera, not only for aviation.
Good luck with it!

I was going to put a deposite down for one of these today as im visiting the USA in August. But i have serious worries about this AF problem. Even more so as it's main job is going to be Ice Hockey and hence a quick AF is part of the main reason for the upgrade. Im starting to think the cheaper and tested MKiiN would be a safer option. In a perfect world i would wait for the problem to be solved. But as i HAVE to puchase it when im in the states. So that's something i cannot wait around for them to do !!!!.  Sad

I hope this poxy AF problem is not going to screw up my plans.

Don't let the AF issue put you off - I had mine out all day Saturday and the AF worked a treat.

The issue probably comes from knowing how to set it up properly, there are several ways to set the Al Servo tracking on it within the custom functions. Like anything new people need to get used to setting it up properly and as I mentioned earlier this is not a camera to use straight out of the box. As you would expect from a very top end pro camera there are some 4 groups of custom functions that need to be understood properly.

The menu is very similar to both the 5D and 30D I already have - I didn't own a MK11 but I understand it's much improved - it's easy to navigate around and use.

I am delighted with mine - it is an amazing camera.

Wouldn't be so sure about that.

When the guys from Reuters and Action Images etc are returning theirs with issues I think it is more than the individuals set up.

Apparently Canon in Elstree have had numerous examples returned.

The issues have been well documented on Fredmiranda with a couple of good tests carried out showing the problem.

I am number 27 on the list for mine and am quite happy to stay at number 27 at the moment until all of this gets resolved.

I can do without going to Elstree again. I had enough problems with a 300 L lens to last me a lifetime. Im seriously thinking about getting a MK II N rather than the MK III. With the Dollar at the moment i can get one for about £1600.00 And i know its a tried and tested bit of kit with no AF issues !!!!

The MK III is 800.00 more. With the money i save i could upgrade to a new PC which is seriously needed....

I need some help here. What do you guys think i should do. As i said before the kit will mainly be use for low light high speed work (Ice Hockey). Plus aviation when i get the time. Part of me is saying get the MK III as the sensor is superb in low light, with hardly any noise. But can i risk this AF issue and the possible hassle. I just cannot afford to have my main body stuck at Elstree when the season starts !!!!!  Sad

Simon,

Check out the thread on FM.

Here is the latest update from Rob Galbraith on the subject. http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/con...ent_page.asp?cid=7-8740-9006#july2

22000 + shots taken with 3 production Mk III's and the autofocus issues are very real.

They have tried numerous different settings for the custom functions and none of them make any difference.

The focus issues are very very real and not as a result of user error, there are just too many people out there reporting the issues for it to be user error many of which are pro's shooting day in day out for a living.

I am sticking to my decision to purchase a Mk III but it won't be until the focusing issues have been resolved and the cameras have been tested in the field.

It seems Canon may have stopped shipping the MK III at the present.

Regards

Simon

Cant comment on the AF issues in bright light yet but im sure they are working hard on it.

Only negative aspect are the files..... had to order another 12gb of CFs Big grin

Take care

Cheers guys.

Looks like something you can get away with if your in the right situation. But quick fast AF for me is CRITICAL , and not something i can have being faulty. It's going to be tough as i really did want the MK III. But as i HAVE to purchase it while on holiday i must purchase it in 6 weeks time. I doubt very much that the problem + new production will be available by then  Sad

Florian can i ask how many photo's are you getting on a 1 GB card in JPEG/Large format.

Cheers
Simon

It's been a while mate, you well these days??

I can't comment on any of the issues of the 1D MkIII but I can vouch for the 1D MkIIn. It's an animal mate and believe me you won't miss much at 8.5fps. It's stunning and I love it to bits. I was waiting for the 1Dn to be upgraded but eventually I had waited long enough and there was no anouncement so I went for the 1Dn just before Xmas and I am not sorry I did. E-mail me if you want to know more about the 1Dn but really mate, no matter which of the 1D's you get they will be awsome. I hope you make the right decision but saving some money for a PC upgrade is very tempting too. One other thing, just like Flo said, you'll need a good few more CF Cards and no smaller than 2G Big grin

Enjoy!!

Take care
