Does anyone know the current situation for spotting at CDG and ORY? Thinking in particular about photography but also "just" taking registrations with binoculars/the naked eye. What is the general policy of the local authorities, will they chase you away or leave you alone?

Hi,

I've been to CDG in June and in ORY in July this year for spotting.
For CDG I had the gratis "spotting licence" which was very usefull. Although we were shooting quite far away from the oficial airport grounds we met 6 soldiers who checked our licenses. After they checked it they continued their patrol and we could continue spotting.
I don't think you need such a licence if you are only watching but as it is absolutely free I would order one.

In ORY we hd no problems with the airport authorities, neither on the observation deck nor at another spot close to the runway and far away from the terminal.

I hope this helps.

Regards
Stefan

I'm flying in to CDG from MAN on Fri 7th September in the morning then onwards to Mauritius with Air Mauritius in the afternoon. As I'll have about 3-4 hours to spend in the departure lounge, will there be any problems taking photo's of aircraft at the gates or taxiing? Will I need one of these licenses? Sorry to hijak your thread (thats probably the wrong word considering what happened in Antalya yesterday!), but I don't want to start my holiday behind bars!

If anyone will be around on the 7th, I'm inbound on the AF1669 (A320) from MAN at 1135 and outbound on the MK045/AF980 (A343) at 1630. Would be nice to have a photo, I'll wave to you!

Thanks,

Darren

Darren,

I don't think there will be any problems because you are security checked inside the airport building. I don't know exactly about the recent situation in CDG terminal 2 but in terminal 1 where I departed from there were no signs etc. which prohibited taking photos there. If they don't allow you to take photos , they'll tell you, But I doubt that there'd be any further consequences for you if you stop it immediately.

Stefan

Hi there,

ORY: poses no problem.

CDG: Patrols circulate permanently. You'd better have this "licence" called "Autorisation de prise de vue" translated into "Authorisation to make photos".

You can find interesting infos here: http://www.kerozen.org/

Cheers
Patrick

Hi,

kerozen is one possibility to get the licence. Another and IMO better solution is to mail directly to the responsible authority which sends out the licences for free. If you order it via kerozen you have to buy a membership there.

Stefan

Thanks Stefan. That's normally what I do but seeing the post about requiring authorisation, I didn't want to get the camera out and be asked if I had one. I nearly got arrested in St Lucia for taking photo's from the departure lounge but they are far stricter over there.

I went to CDG earlier this year and got stopped by the patrols as well. It's is a good idea to get the photography permit I think. It's free and lasts for ever as far as I can tell, there is no expiery date on mine anyway! To get one you have to email Xavier Huby the head of police for that area. The address is: xavier.huby@seine-saint-denis.pref.gouv.fr
In the email explain that the pics you take will be for your own collection/a.net but not for commercial use. Also scan the photo page of your passport and attach to the email. You should get the pass by post in a week or two.

Hope this helps.
