After last week, and the new offering of the EOS 40D and the EOS 1Ds Mk III it got me thinking as to the niche where the EOS 5D is currently sitting.
It has been 2 years now since the release of the 5D, and there have since been many large technology leaps. Most notable the D!GiC III processor, larger resoultion sensors (D300 and D3) as well as greater motivation for many users to move onto full frame sensors.
So the question I want to know is, when would we reasonably expect Canon to revamp its 5D offering? I can think of several improvements which could be made to the current model which would be justifiable for those wishing to upgrade such as:
1. Weather-sealed body
2. Dust Sensor cleaning mechanism
3. Improved motorised shutter
4. Improved fps (D!GiC III)
5. Improved LCD with Live View (benefit or not...)
6. Larger resolution sensor (possibly given the new 1Ds Mk III offering over the Mk II)
7. 14-bit A/D Power
So... what does everyone think? Next year? Year after?

The 5D is going to be my next purchase as I have a few more weddings on next year. I have the 1Dn and my trusty 20D so I am in no rush to get the 5D. I will be waiting for it's upgrade and hopefully it will be early next year. I think Canon may wait till then to release it as they have already saturated the market this year with the 1D & 1Ds MkIII, and now the soon to be released 40D, due in Nov I think. The 400D was released late last year so that's 4 new cameras in the last 12 months, but who knows it may just come out before Xmas. Naturally the sensor mpx will increase, have DIGIC III and a few more extras thrown in. We can only speculate dream and drool .
The same with me. I can't wait! However, I also don't want to get it now when an uprgrade with features that I will use might be out within 12 months. Whilst the 40D looks good, its still 1.6x FOVC which I want to avoid.

I was thinking the same thing - we had the marketing hype of the 400D starting around this time last year, now its the 1DS Mk III and the 40D so I was hoping that in the next 12 months might be the 5D which gets the upgrade.

Quoting Aero145 (Reply 3): It'll come, just wait, rumours are just fun, nothing important.
That's basically what I was hoping - for me to get it I would expect the following specs:
1. Full frame, 14mp, D!GiC III
2. Weather sealing - at least the CF and battery doors like the EOS 40D
3. Improved fps rate (probably a 90 shot JPEG buffer)
4. Dust reduction mechanism
Those would make it a worthwhile upgrade IMHO. With specs like that, it is starting to look more like a 1Ds (which is good as it differentiates it with the offerings of the 40D) but with the size to match.
