How Is Increasing The Popularity Of A Photo?

When you look at the most popular for the last 24 hours, for instance, you may see from a few hundreds to a few thousands views.

I understand that being on the home page gives a boost to a photo and, on the other hands, some photos are immediately attractive... Smile
But apart from that, what are the processes that make the number of views of photos increases with so much differences between them ?

Hi Patrick!

That's a very interesting topic and a very complex one too!
There are of course photos that immediately catch your attention be it a very rare or new aircraft, a very spectacular motive, or a special view. Those photos will normally get many views almost from the instant they get added. On the other hand then there are the 'grey mice' which show common aircraft in standard views and which will normally struggle to even hit the 100 views mark. And then there are all those shots in between.
Almost certain high hitters are cockpit or cabin shots of airliners, overview shots of major airports or the An-225 whilst almost certain low hitters would be standard B737s or A320 in common situations.
But since we don't live in a perfect world, everything is not that simple. For example on days where Johan used to clear his queue it would be extremely difficult to get a shot into the Top15 as "Johan's photos" would normally be real gems altogether.
Also the number of hits your photo gets largely depends on the number of shots added per day; when the screening is low and only about 250-400 photos get added per day those shots get a higher average view count whereas (like at the moment) when 500+ photos are in the Top24h the average view count per photo decreases.
Almost without exception your photo will get high hits when it gets into the Top15 of the Top24h and even more so if it becomes a Top3 photo as those experience the higher exposure due to their appearance on the front page of A.net.
I think that is due to the people looking at the Top24h but not wanting to spend the time to look through 500+ photos; most people (myself included) will look at the Top15 to Top60 trusting that interesting enough photos will make it there anyway.
And then of course there are special cases like photos that experience high views within the first days of their appearance but will loose interest as time goes by or the exact inverse case of photos getting only a few hundred views within the first days but get a sudden boost later on. This can happen for instance if your photo is linked to on another popular website.

There is also the very interesting case of 2 different photographers uploading almost identical shots but where one gets thousands of views whereas the other one can be happy if his photo gets to the 1000 mark.
And talking of photographers it is also certain that if you're well known in the community your average view count will increase as many people will look at your photos only because they know you personally or from viewing your previous shots and knowing that you consistently deliver high quality shots.

So as you can see there are many variables in that game and just like with movies you can't predict the success of your photo with absolut certainty; there are of course variables you can influence to increase the chances to get a high hitter but sometimes even if all variables work in your favor you won't get the desired result.

But then again getting many views ain't everything! Wink

Just my cartesian aspect. I try to understand the mecanics behind this and, as usual, Thierry has a good analysis Smile
