After comparing with a fellow photographer with the same lens, I've come to the conclusion that my 80-400 VR needs to be calibrated. The reason being softness out at the longer focal lengths. Now I know the 80-400 isn't tack sharp out at 400, but shots taken in the f8 to f10 range, and shutter speeds 1/500 and greater, shouldn't be completely useless. Not to mention I'm noticing parts of the image in the left bottom side of the frame are soft and often times blurry. I also know it's not the camera body because I recall having similar issues on my D50.

So how do I go about getting my lens calibrated?

Joey

I would first diagnose the problem first and make sure that you have no other problems with the lens. Also I would let nobody but Nikon touch it.

Agreed with NIKV69 - send it to Nikon and don't let anyone else mess with it. Unless you are 100% certain the body isn't part of the problem, I'd send the lens and camera together.

If the focus is asymetrical it could be a lens element is out of alignment.

Well I've been having softness/focusing issues on two bodies, the D50 and the D200. Both of which my settings were between f8 and f10 with shutter speeds at or above 1/500th. Some where on the verge of being oof.

Here is my shot, taken with my D200, set to Dynamic AF, center point selected, 400 mm, f9, 1/500, ISO 160

And my buddies shot (with permission) D70, 400mm, f8, 1/640

I wouldn't send the body, Nikon has probably a million test bodies in the shop.

I was thinking the same thing.

I only suggested that in case it was a calibration issue, which is adjusted in the body. But if it's happening equally on multiple bodies, then it's likely only the lens...
