PHOTO SCREENER

Hi,

a friend is planning to go to Miami on a spotting trip. As he hasn't got a driving license, he'd like to know if it's possible to get to the spotting positions without a car (walk or public transportation).

Thanks in his name
Regards

Stefan

He better bring some walking shoes. Most of the spotting locations are on the west side of the airport. The "Holes" is the farthest from any semblence of public transport. A taxi can get you there, but taxis in MIA are not cheap. It may help to know where he will be staying. There are a couple of hotels within walking disatnce of the Holes as well as the spot at the approach end of runway 09.

Why would he need the photography fence holes for spotting? Spotting involves using a notepad / logbook and binoculars to write down tail numbers.

Because that is where the police will not give you any grief. From there you get the departures on 08L/08R and 12 as well as the arrivals.

Unless he wants to sit in a parking lot away from the airport, then he will miss out on the departures.

Ok...You completely missed the point of what I said.  Smile

I know why he would want to take photos from the fence holes - that is obvious. I was pointing out that a 'spotter' wouldn't need the photo holes as 'spotters' use binoculars, etc. to write registration numbers down in a log book.

The original e-mail said that someone was going on a "spotting trip" and the reply suggested using the photo holes - which would be pointless for a 'spotter'...  Smile

Matt,

The "holes" is the area where one can go and observe/spot/photograph aircraft and numerous people spot from there. Not necessarily use the holes in the fence.

I think not.

No. There is a bus route from the MIA terminal which goes round the S. and E sides of the airport. The holes are on 25th Street, about 5 minutes walk from Milam Dairy (72nd Ave) http://www.co.miami-dade.fl.us/transit/images/pdfs/routes/238.pdf . Only runs once an hour though.

There has always been confusion on this site over the term 'spotter'. It's used interchangeably (by some) to mean either a number-logger and/or a photographer. Not clear which OP meant.

.
...which is precisely the problem.  Smile

This younger generation of photogs are calling themselves 'spotters' and they have no idea what a spotter really is / does.
