I am going to see a friend in HAM but will be flying Swiss via ZRH. I have heard a lot of good things about spotting in ZRH so I want to get clued up so I don't miss anything during my short stay.

What is the afternoon like for traffic? I can get a flight that arr at 11:40 and leaves at 17:35. If the afternoons are not worth it then I could just get a quick connection and do some spotting on the way back. On the way back I can get a flight that gets to ZRH at 21:20 on Sat and leaves at 12:10 on Sunday. I have heard the early mornin (6-9am) is good for heavies, is this right? Also is it true that there are some very basic rooms that you can get in the airport for about 60CHF? Is Sunday morning good for heavies or is another day better? I can get that overnight stop any day I think.

Where are these pics taken from? Are they palces I can get to without a car?

Hi,

believe it or not, I have just stop over in ZRH, spotting is great from terrace, and most of photos you have shown are there.

Dont know about the rooms tho.

I booked longer connection to spot too. I think its worth it.

Regards, Keishi

Hi,

check out this spotting guide for ZRH. Imo it's very good because there are also bus connections to the spots mentioned.

Quoting Ketko2 (Reply 1):

I wish I could get a flight out in the evening but I think it's a special price that does not really allow too long a stopover. It's £99 with the flights I quoted but it's more like £199 if I had a longer stopover. If I could get from ZRH to HAM cheap then I coudl just get a flight BHX-ZRH and choose how long I stayed in ZRH.

Around noon the most big aircraft are leaving Zurich, only the aircraft of the USA leave "early" the Singapore Airlines (think you like it very much looking at the selection you made) around 14:00 at the time I visited Zurich. The only problem you can have at Zurich is fog, seems they have more fog as anywhere else.

Hi Andy,

I would say No 2 is made from the top of the parking lot. It look similar to this one:

http://www.airliners.net/open.file?id=1257842.

No 1,3, 5,6 looks like the terrace in ZRH.

Klaus

What runway is most likely to be in use? Is there one that is used most of the time or is it pretty random?

If you take a look on the link whisperjet included, there is a list of runways in use, the big jets use runway 16 normally and the smaller ones 28, arrival of all jets is on runway 14 during the periods I have been there.

The terrace at ZRH is great until just after midday, with the ideal runway use being 34 as then all traffic must taxi past you. Shots into the cul-de-sac are the only option if the wind favours runway 16 (which it usually does), however you can get some nice portraits, although most of it will be Swiss.

If I remember rightly, car park F is good for taxi shots in the morning (it overlooks the threshold of the cross-runway), although heavies normally do not use this runway.

The Wanderweg is within walking distance but I forget how to get there. Takes about 20 mins from the terminal. It is somewhere near the GA ramp and is good for line-ups but that's all I can remember I'm afraid.

The other spots are well away from the airport and require a car.

Does anyone know if the airport bus tours run on a Monday and if so at what times and can you buy a ticket on the day?

Also, how much does it cost to get the train to Zurich town and how long does it take?

Hi,

It takes app. 20 minutes to get from the airport to the city centre.

Hi Andy,

you can find arrival/departure information here -- sorted even by airline and/or aircraft type, if you wish.

Cheers,
Hans
