I was wondering if there is anyplace at Des Moines International Airport to legally take pictures and video of aircraft.

Technically anywhere that is not private property is a legal spot. Now whether or not you'll get hassled is another story.

Ask them.

I had good luck shooting Runway 23 approaches from the parking lot of the Hampton Inn on Fleur Drive. This is obviously private property, so exercise good judgement if you try this. If you're staying overnight, this hotel would have good views of the approach - and there's a pool out back that would have great views in the summertime (check Google Earth). Decent shots can also be had from inside the secured areas of the terminal if you're flying in/out.

I shot a bit at DSM back in October. I spent most of my time on the north side of the parking ramp on the top level. I was not approached by anyone and it was a great vantage point for 23 approaches. It got pretty cold and windy up there, but, hey, it's Iowa!

Emailed them they told me on top of the parking ramp, but if I park I'll have to pay for however long I'm there. I've been railfanning for 20 years and lately it is getting to be a hassle,so I've been curious to see how people watching planes are doing.
