Hey everyone. After admiring the photos on A.net for so long now, I decided to give it a try of my own. My first day of spotting today at SFO was tons of fun. Although very dark and rainy, I had a blast. Unfortunately my shots didn't turn out too good and I'm wondering what can be done either to salvage the photos or something to do differently next time. They all just seem poorly lit and grainy. I'm using a Canon digital Rebel XT and an EF 75-300mm F/4-5.6 lens. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

-Max

Hi Max,

these cannot be fixed. Proper exposure always helps with grain. It is possible to take a decent picture in poor conditions but you can't rely on camera's metering. It will always underexpose under dull skies.

Hi Max,

to be honest I still feel more like a rookie too but as far as I know about quality requirements here I'm afraid that these shots do not stand a chance to be accepted IMO. However do not give up and keep trying please. For me it took almost two years of frustration till my first shot was accepted but there's always a possibility to improve your skills and to get shots accepted.

Hi Max,

sorry that I probably can't help you more from here but what I can advice is to start on a sunny day with some clouds in the sky. That would make half of success. Your camera and lens are pretty fine and will do their job well. Just be sure that you get some useful photo editing software to post process your shots. Best way how to learn more is to find some other aviation photographs in your area. I think that they'll be glad to help you. However if you will want to do not hesitate to send me an e-mail (use contact form from my profile pls). Maybe you can visit Prague so I'll be able take you to Ruzyne Airport and show some tricks  Smile

Regards,
